BLACKSBURG, Va. -
The men's and women's track and field teams traveled to the Rector Fieldhouse in Blacksburg, Va. to represent Maryland at the Virginia Tech Elite Indoor Meet this weekend.
Christina Nelson recorded a season-best mile time of 4:58.17, which earned the senior second place and an invitation to the ECAC meet this postseason. Kristen Batts and Moriah Young earned ECAC qualification with weight throws of 53-11.25 and 52-6.5 respectively. Batts's throw was the longest of the season for the Terrapins.
In the 800-meter run, freshman Taylor Bumpas recorded the sixth-best time in Maryland history at 2:13.43, which earned the speedy newcomer third place honors. Senior Erin Matyus followed in fourth at 2:15.13 and freshman Christy Goldmann placed eleventh at 2:19.71.
Senior Natalie Goodman shaved a second off of her season-best time in the 400. Goodman's mark of 57.83 earned the Terrapin eighth place.
Multi-athlete Kiani Profit placed tenth in the high jump with a season-best mark of 5-6.25, while Lucile Cancre placed fifteenth with a jump of 5-4.5.
The men were led by sophomore sensation Dwight Barbiasz, whose new personal-best mark of 7-3.25 earned the Terrapin first place honors in the high jump. Sophomore Jarenn Stewart placed fifth in the long jump with a mark of 23-8.
In the 200-meter run, Floyd Hawkes finished eighth with a season-best mark of 21.98, which earns the sophomore IC4A qualification and the fifth-fastest mark in school history.
Tommy Friscia continued his strong season for the Terrapins with a fifth place finish in the 800-meter run at 1:54.35. Max Bruno followed in twelfth at 1:55.59.
Senior Jeremy Samuels placed sixth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.3. In the open section of the 400, Shawn David and Chris Brown placed third and seventh with marks of 50.1 and 51.17 respectively.
Maryland Notes:
The women's 4x400-meter relay finished fifth with a time of 3:43.40. In the long jump, Ashley Hendrix placed twelfth with a mark of 18-7.25 and Tiffani Long finished eighteenth at 18-2.25. In the triple jump, Arielle Statham finished twelfth with a mark of 39-3.25 and Ashley Carbray placed eighteenth at 37-2.5. Danielle Karagannis placed sixteenth in the 3000-meter run.
Dareem David and John Davenport placed fifteenth and seventeenth in the 200. Alex Lundy finished seventeenth in the mile run and thirty-first in the 800. The men's 4x400-meter relay team placed seventh with a time of 3:18.21.
