COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
University of Maryland senior guard Lori Bjork of Johnston, Iowa, was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District first team as voted by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
"I'm excited and honored to be recognized," Bjork said. "I've always tried to bring the same competitive drive that I display on the court into the classroom. The same work habits that helped me to become a Division I basketball player are also responsible for my academic success. I've also been fortunate to work with understanding and supportive coaches and professors."
Bjork leads the Terrapins in three-pointers with 61 this season and has led in points on seven occasions. She is second in the Atlantic Coast Conference in three's made and in three-point field goal percentage (.439). Bjork has climbed up the Maryland senior record books with her talent from behind the arc; currently sitting at No. 3 in three's made (61) and No. 4 in three-point attempts (139). Bjork has registered multiple treys in a game 16 times including a career high-tying six in Maryland's upset of Virginia earlier this year.
Her work ethic on the court is resonated off the court as well in her 3.9 grade point average as she works toward her Master's degree in kinesiology. Bjork also maintained a 3.93 GPA while getting her bachelor's degree in political science at the University of Illinois. She left the Illini as a 1,000 point scorer and the school's record holder for most three's in a career. Bjork also owns Illinois' best career three-point shooting percentage.
Bjork is a three-time Academic All-District first team selection and was named Academic All-America third team in 2007. Thus far, she has amassed 1,365 points; over half of those coming from her 270 made three-pointers.
"It is no surprise that Lori is a three-time first team selection," Maryland women's basketball head coach Brenda Frese said. "She approaches everything in life with a work ethic that is second to none. It is why she has been so successful in life and will continue being successful after she graduates."
Bjork joins the ranks of two-time Academic All-America first team selections Crystal Langhorne (2007, 2008) and Shay Doron (2006, 2007).
In order to be eligible for nomination, student-athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games and have at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA.
Bjork is now a candidate for the Academic All-America ballot. The Academic All-America team will be announced on Tuesday, Feb. 23.
Joining Bjork on the All-District first team is Trisha Krewski (Bucknell), Joyce Novacek (Bucknell), Liz Repella (West Virginia) and Morgan Robertson (La Salle).
