COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The Maryland gymnastics team won the vault and balance beam events in its home tri-meet against East Atlantic Gymnastics League opponents North Carolina and George Washington Tuesday night. After a month on the road, the Terrapins returned home to College Park to welcome two conference opponents.
"It was definitely good to come home," head coach Brett Nelligan said. "It's hard to get up on a Tuesday. I thought the girls did a good job as far as that was concerned."
Freshman Ally Krikorian, the current EAGL Rookie of the Week, and junior Abigail Adams tied for first in the Terps' first event of the night - vault. They each earned scores of 9.900. It was Krikorian's third 9.900 on vault of the season. Sophomore Kyra Phillips tied her career high of 9.800. Maryland finished with a team score of 49.000.
Senior Talia Tossone won the balance beam competition with her score of 9.800, while freshman Briana Melander tied for third with Adams with scores of 9.750. Sophomore Becca Pang was fifth with her 9.725 - a new season-high. The Terrapins earned a team score of 48.700.
"We're a good team and we're ready to go," Nelligan said. "You have to have different people stepping up at different times."
On floor, senior Michele Brenner, the reigning EAGL Specialist of the Week, took fourth with a 9.800. Maryland scored a 48.600 on floor. On bars, the Terps scored a 47.075.
"We just had a really uncharacteristic night on bars. We've been really consistent there," Nelligan said.
After missing the last week due to a rib injury, Adams earned an all-around score of 39.200, which put her at second in the all-around competition.
"Abbey is a warrior," Nelligan said. "She was out last meet, but she wanted to be in. When the doctors cleared her today, it was no decision in her mind."
North Carolina won the meet with a score of 194.00, while the Terps scored a 193.375. George Washington earned an overall team score of 192.825.
The Terps will compete again this week as they welcome No. 17 Auburn, Yale and George Washington for a quad meet Saturday at 4 p.m. in the Comcast Center Pavilion.
