GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Terrapins get an early taste of last season's ACC Tournament Championship game. The No. 9 seeded Terps defeated No. 8 seeded North Carolina to advance to the quarterfinal round of play.
Maryland takes on top-seeded Duke at 3 p.m. Friday.
The game will be televised on RSN (RSN - Fox Sports Net South (FSNS), Comcast Sports Net (CSN), Fox Sports Net Florida (FSNFL), New England Sports Network (NESN)) and Fox HD.
Behind double-double performances from sophomore Lynetta Kizer (22 pts/10 rbs) and freshman Tianna Hawkins (13 pts/11 rbs), Maryland took out UNC, 83-77. The Terps jumped out to an early 10-2 lead and held the Tar Heels under 10 points for most of the first half. Maryland led by as many as 16 points.
North Carolina rallied in the second half and brought the game within two points in the last minute. Sophomore Kim Rodgers was fouled and stepped to the line and made it a two possession game, 81-77. As the Tar Heels inbounded the ball, freshman Jackie Nared grabbed the steal, passed to Hawkins who eased in the layup as the final second ticked off the clock.
It was the first time UNC has been knocked out in the first round of the tournament.
Maryland now advances to the quarterfinals to face Duke for the third time this season. The Terrapins played the Blue Devils shot-for-shot in both games, but the veteran squad from Duke prevailed in the end.
The Terrapins own the all-time series advantage in the ACC tournament against Duke, 6-4, and in neutral locations, 7-4. Maryland won in overtime in the championship game of last year's tournament, 92-89.
Duke is coming off a regular season loss to North Carolina. UNC defeated the Blue Devils by 10 points, 64-54, in Chapel Hill, N.C. Two players average double-figure points for Duke, All-ACC First Team member Jasmine Thomas and All-ACC Third Team member Joy Cheek. The two veterans sit at 15.7 and 10.0 points per game, respectively. Duke had a first round bye in the tournament.
