Four Terps Earn All-ACC Honors

April 22, 2010

COLLEGE PARK, MD. - Maryland placed four players on the 2010 All-ACC Men's Lacrosse Team, which was announced today by the Atlantic Coast Conference. Junior All-American Ryan Young earned his second-straight All-ACC honor, while junior attackman Grant Catalino, senior goalie Brian Phipps and junior defender Brett Schmidt made the team for the first time.

All four ACC men's programs are represented on the annual All-ACC team, which was determined by a vote of the four head coaches. Maryland's four honorees were the most by any school. Duke and North Carolina each had three selections, while Virginia had two players make the team.

Young repeats as an all-conference after leading the Terps with 20 assists. He is also second on the team in points (31) and fifth in goals (9). Young has been aggressive when the ball is on the ground and is fourth on the squad with 25 groundballs. He is just two points away from becoming just the sixth Maryland player since 2002 to reach the 100-point plateau and the first to do so by tallying more assists than goals.

Catalino, a Tewaaraton Trophy nominee, makes his first All-ACC team after leading the Terps in goals (20) and points (37). He currently ranks third in the conference with 3.7 points per game, which is good for 17th in the nation. Catalino's signature moment of the season came vs. the Blue Devils in the Konica Minolta Face-Off Classic when he scored five goals, including the game-winner in overtime. He is also a main contributor to the Terps' man-up unit, which is No. 1 in the country, with seven extra-man assists this season.

Phipps, the 2007 ACC Freshman of the Year, makes his first all-conference team in his final season. He has led the Terps to an 8-2 record with an 8.95 goals-against average and is second in the ACC with 9.9 saves per game. Phipps' performance is even more remarkable considering he missed all of fall practice recovering from a torn ACL sustained last May in the NCAA tournament.

Schmidt, a former long pole who was moved to close defense early in the 2009 season, earns his first All-ACC award after becoming one of the top shutdown defenders in the nation this spring. He is second on the team with 14 caused turnovers and is tied for fifth with 23 groundballs. But Schmidt's accomplishments this year cannot be measured by statistics alone. In Maryland's last three games the opposing players Schmidt has been assigned to cover have totaled 0 goals, 1 assist and six shots.

The ACC individual awards for Player, Coach and Freshman of the Year, which are also voted on by the head coaches, will be announced at a later time.

The 2010 ACC Men's Lacrosse Championship will begin Friday, April 23, at Capital One Field on Byrd Stadium. No 4-seed Duke and No. 1-seed Virginia will face-off for the second time in seven days in the tournament's first semifinal game at 5 p.m. No. 3-seed Maryland battles No. 2-seed North Carolina in the second semifinal, which is slated for a 7:30 p.m. face-off.
