Terps Trump Cavs, 1-0, in Final Spring Match

GERMANTOWN, Md. - The Maryland men's soccer team handled Virginia, 1-0, Friday at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Germantown in the final exhibition game of the spring.
Held in a scoreless stalemate with the Cavaliers through the first half, the Terps finally took the lead in the 71st minute as Patrick Mullins' long header landed perfectly in front of Jason Herrick, who scored the game's only goal.
"We played a highly competitive game," head coach Sasho Cirovski said. "With Maryland and Virginia, it is always going to be spirited."
Rough play dominated the first period as three yellow cards were distributed, but after Virginia's T.J. Cyrus received a red card, the game settled down, leading to Maryland's game-winning goal.
"I thought the win was secondary," Cirovski said. "The more important thing was Justin's Quest."
Though exciting, the game played a reserved role to the presence of Justin Friedlander and his Justin's Quest campaign. Founded by the Friedlander family after Justin was diagnosed with a brain tumor in March of 2009, Justin's Quest is aiming to raise $250,000 for the society while shooting 40,000 baskets, one for every person diagnosed with a brain tumor this year.
Justin and Maryland basketball guard Greivis Vasquez performed the opening kick-off and at halftime and the pair even competed against each other in an obstacle course held on the field. After the game, TopDrawerSoccer.com and match-MVPs Doug Rodkey and Virginia's Hunter Jumper presented the entire Friedlander family with a $1,000 donation.
