WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -
Wake Forest starting pitcher Michael Dimock held Maryland to four hits over seven innings and the Demon Deacons tallied five runs during a two-out rally in the second inning on their way to a 13-1 victory over the Terps Friday night.
Maryland starting pitcher Eric Potter surrendered a double to Matt Conway to open the second, but was nearly out of the inning after inducing Mac Williamson into a foul-out and recording a strikeout of Carlos Lopez. Potter walked catcher Mike Lubanski, however, and then gave up a single, another walk and another single as Wake Forest took a 4-1 lead. Steven Brooks followed with a two-run triple that gave the Demon Deacons a 6-1 lead.
Dimock, meanwhile, was cruising. The sophomore retired the side in order in the third, fourth and fifth innings to preserve the lead.
Wake Forest added insurance with Mike Murray's three-run home run in the sixth, and put the game well out of reach with one more run in the seventh and two in the eighth.
Potter (2-10) allowed six runs, five of them earned, on five hits in two innings and took the loss. Maryland fell to 17-38 overall and 5-24 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Dimock (3-9) earned the win, striking out six and walking just one in seven innings. With the win, Wake Forest improved to 17-37 and 7-22 in the ACC.
Maryland's lone run came in the second inning. First baseman Gary Schneider led off the frame with a single and later scored on catcher Jack Cleary's single to the shortstop. Schneider finished the day 2-for-3, extending his hitting streak to10 games.
Maryland and Wake Forest meet again on Saturday at 1 p.m., the season finale for each team.
