Six Terps Named USILA All-Americans

May 27, 2010

COLLEGE PARK, MD. - Maryland placed six players on the 2010 USILA Men's Lacrosse All-America teams, which were announced Thursday. Leading the way was redshirt junior Brian Farrell, who earned second team honors as a defender. Juniors Grant Catalino and Brett Schmidt were third team selections at attack and defense, respectively.

Two Terps, junior defender Max Schmidt and senior goalie Brian Phipps, were honorable mention selections. Maryland's sixth honoree was junior attackman Ryan Young as an honorable mention selection. Young's name was mistakenly left off of the released list, but USILA officials contacted Maryland to make the school aware of the oversight.

Farrell, a native of Baltimore, Md., earns his second All-America honor after missing nearly all of the 2009 season due to serious thoracic injuries. He was a dominant force on both ends of the field for the Terps in 2010. Defensively, he finishing the season second on the team in groundballs (53) and caused turnovers (26). On the offensive side for the field Farrell finished with 12 points, which was 10th-best on the team, on six goals and six assists, which was the fifth-most on the squad. For his career Farrell now has 35 points on 21 goals and 14 assists, 133 groundballs and 66 caused turnovers.

He finished his third season as a Terp with the fourth-best point total in his first three seasons since freshman records were first kept in 1970 with 143 points. That total ranks Catalino 21st on the career points list at Maryland, while his 88 career goals ties him for 15th on that all-time list. Catalino's 54 points were the most by a Terrapin player since 2006.

Brett Schmidt, a native of Dublin, Pa., earns his first USILA All-America honor after being named a LaxPower All-American earlier this month. A shut down defender for the majority of the season, Schmidt led the Terps with 28 caused turnovers and finished tied for fifth on the team with 36 groundballs. Schmidt helped lead a Terrapin defense that finished the season ranked first in caused turnovers per game in the NCAA (11.38) and seventh in groundballs per game (36.06).

Max Schmidt, a native of Upper Arlington, Ohio, earns his second All-America honor after having a solid junior season, including a terrific second half of the year. Overall, Schmidt finished the season third on the team in groundballs (39) and caused turnovers (21). Schmidt helped lead a Terrapin defense that finished the season ranked first in caused turnovers per game in the NCAA (11.38) and seventh in groundballs per game (36.06).

Phipps, a native of Annapolis, Md., earns his first All-America honor after finishing his career as one of the finest goalies in his Maryland history. This past season he led the Terps to a 12-4 record with a goals-against average of 8.20, which ranked seventh in the NCAA, and a .556 save percentage. For his career, Phipps made 473 saves, which ranks fourth on the all-time list. During his four seasons at Maryland Phipps compiled a record of 31-13 (.705).

Young, a native of Manhasset, N.Y., earns his second All-America award after leading the team with 30 assists, the first time any Terp has reached that mark since 2006. For the season, Young ranked ninth in the NCAA in assists per game (1.88). He finished second on the team in points with 48 and was third on the team with 18 goals.
