For the eighth-straight year the University of Maryland men's lacrosse team will compete in the NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship tournament. The Terps, which received the No. 3 seed with an at-large bid, will kickoff the tournament against Hofstra on Sat., May 15 at noon at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium. The game will be televised live on ESPNU.
This marks the seventh time that Maryland has earned the No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Maryland was previously a No. 3 seed in 1971, 1975, which was the last time the Terps won a national championship, 1977, 1978, 2003, 2004 and 2005. The Terps have an all-time record of 12-6 as the No. 3 seed in the NCAA tournament.
The Terrapins are 8-1 all-time against the Pride and have faced them in the NCAA tournament in 1975 and 2000. The Terps topped Hofstra, 19-11, in College Park in the first round, en route to the NCAA title. Maryland defeated Hofstra, 14-12, in the first round of the tournament at UMBC Stadium. Mike Mollot led the Terps that day with seven points, while Pat McGinnis made 13 saves.
The Terps, 11-3 on the season, were awarded one of 10 at-large bids to the tournament and are coming off of an 18-10 win vs. Colgate on Saturday. Hofstra, 9-4 on the season, also made it into the field as an at-large selection. The Pride is making its 16th NCAA appearance and is 4-15 all-time in NCAA tournament play. Maryland is making its 33rd appearance in the NCAA Tournament, which is tied for second all-time.
The winner of the Maryland/Hofstra game will meet the winner of the Princeton/Notre Dame first round game in the quarterfinals on Saturday, May 22, at Princeton Stadium in Princeton, N.J.
