PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA - With the help of a pair of former Maryland standouts, the United States defeated Algeria, 1-0, on Wednesday to advance to the knockout stage of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Maurice Edu garnered his first career World Cup start after being stripped of a game-winning goal against Slovenia late last week. Fellow former Terp Clarence Goodson was a substitute in the match.
The win against Algeria netted the Americans a first-place finish in Group C. With just its fifth shutout in World Cup play, the U.S. (1-0-2) won a group for the first time since 1930 and will face the runner-up in Group D this weekend.
