NEW ORLEANS, La. - University of Maryland junior Kiani Profit has been named the Women's Field Event Athlete of the Year in the Mid-Atlantic Region by the U.S. Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association.
Profit, a multi-sport athlete from Pasadena, Calif., was one of eight regional winners in balloting by the region's coaches. The award was based on performances during the outdoor season.
An All-American indoors with her second-place finish nationally in the pentathlon, Profit is seeded fourth in the heptathlon at next week's NCAA Outdoor Nationals in Eugene, Ore.
She snapped a 26-year-old school record in the heptathlon with her effort at the Atlantic Coast Conference, scoring 5,686 points, with marks that put her in the top 10 all-time at Maryland in three of the seven events.
Profit competed at last year's NCAA Outdoor Nationals in the 400-meter hurdles, reaching the semifinals.
