Quotes from the ACC Kickoff
On quarterback Jamarr Robinson:
"He's a dual threat. He can run the ball, the can throw the ball and he knows the offense. He played last year. He's a playmaker. We're confident in the things he can do for us. I really expect big things out of him this year. He's a leader and the whole team is behind him.
On his evolution as a quarterback during the off-season:
"He understands why he's making mistakes. He can fix them himself. That's when you know he's really getting it. He's telling us when we're doing something wrong even when he doesn't throw to our side. He's really maturing on a quarterback."
On getting the ball down the field more this year:
"We'll take a shot for big plays when the opportunity presents itself. Obviously, the offensive line was young last year. They've matured now. They're a lot more athletic. They really worked hard this summer and they've grown. I'm confident and Jamarr is confident playing with them."
On the importance of Da'Rel Scott:
"I think it's clear that when he plays we're a different team. I think he can turn a regular run that's eight yards for someone else into an 80-yard touchdown. He hits the hole fast and the offensive line likes blocking for him. They always joke around and say they don't have to block as long because he hits the hole so fast. We're confident in what Da'Rel is doing, he's working hard and he ran track in the spring. He ran 4.2 or 4.3 (in the 40-yard dash) for the scouts so he has some speed."
On playing with Jamarr Robinson:
"It helps you out because the defense can't do certain things; they have to account for his legs. But at the same time if Jamarr takes off, you don't know whether to start blocking or to continue to run because of his arm strength."
On the team's general outlook:
"I think everyone is upbeat and energetic. We're going into our second year with Coach Brown, our defensive coordinator, and I think everyone has a better understanding of the defense. I think we can build on last year. There is a little bit of a learning curve when you're learning a new scheme, but now I think we have a better understanding of what everybody is doing on defense. I think that'll make us better as a whole."
On the youth of the team:
"We have a lot of young guys that can contribute. On the defensive line both Joe Vellano and Justin Anderson are sophomores, as is Isaiah Ross. They'll be big contributors for us on the defensive line. At linebacker, you have David Mackall, Avery Murray and Ryan Donohue who are either freshmen or sophomores and ready to contribute. Then at cornerback we have a wide open spot with Dexter McDougle and Trenton Hughes, as well as some other guys competing for a spot."
