COLLEGE PARK, MD. -
University of Maryland junior Jasmyne Spencer has been named to the 2010 watch list for the Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy, the most prestigious award in women's collegiate soccer. Spencer was one of 44 overall players named to the list along with seven other Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) standouts.
This marks the first time that a Terrapin has been named to the preseason watch list.
"One of Jasmyne's best qualities is her competitiveness, and the fact that she always plays as though she has something to prove," head coach Brian Pensky said. "And in this case, she has proven that she belongs along-side the nation's top players."
Spencer is coming off a sophomore season that saw her selected to the All-ACC first team and a first team All-Southeast Region honoree by the NSCAA. The Bay Shore, N.Y., native was also a 2009 Soccer America MVP after leading the Terps with 23 points and nine goals. Those totals were the most by a Terp since 2003 when Kimmy Francis had 24 points on nine goals and six assists.
"This is a great honor and I'm also humbled by my selection," said Spencer. "There are so many great players in the country and to be among them is exciting. It will also provide motivation for me to do my best throughout the season to help this team have a great year."
Considered the highest individual honor in intercollegiate soccer, the recipients of the MAC's Hermann Trophy are selected by Division I head coaches who are current members of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. A committee of coaches narrows the list to 15 semifinalists in November, with three finalists announced in early December. The finalists are invited to the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis, Mo., for a news conference in January, where the winner will be announced, with a presentation banquet following.
