COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Jamarr Robinson and Danny O'Brien tossed two touchdown passes apiece in Monday evening's scrimmage, the first of the preseason, to highlight an early offensive explosion for the Maryland Terrapins.
"Overall I was pleased with it," head coach Ralph Friedgen said after the 100-play scrimmage in Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium. "The offense kept a pretty good pace in the beginning; the defense was tired out. They had one or two drives that were 13 or 14 plays."
The offense scored on seven of the 19 possessions, including touchdowns in three of the first seven drives.
The defense, however, stiffened later in the scrimmage, allowing just one field goal in the final six drives and only one first down on the final three possessions, two of which had the first-team offense facing off against the No. 1 defense.
The Terps are hoping to see a repeat of the first drive many times this season.
On the second play of the scrimmage, with the No. 1 offense matching up against the No. 2 defense, Robinson threw a 71-yard touchdown pass to Torrey Smith who caught the ball at the 35-yard line and raced into the end zone.
Robinson, who was 6-for-11 for 146 yards, tossed his second touchdown of the day three possessions later when he connected with Da'Rel Scott on an 18-yard score.
"I thought Jamarr was sharp," Friedgen said. "He made some plays. He missed a couple passes but he made some good decisions, found the check-down guys. I thought this was one of his better scrimmages."
O'Brien, who went 8 of 13 for 88 yards, threw scoring passes to Kevin Dorsey (22 yards) and Devonte Campbell (3 yards), who had a scrimmage-best three receptions for 51 yards.
Scott rushed five times for scrimmage-high 61 yards, including a 37-yard gallop that set up the second touchdown.
D.J. Adams had 52 yards on eight carries, including a 13-yard touchdown, and Davin Meggett had seven carries for 29 yards.
"I really thought all the (running) backs ran pretty good," Friedgen said. "I thought the first team offensive line did very good. I thought our protection was good until the end."
The defense had four of its six sacks on third down, including one on each of the final two possessions of the scrimmage.
"We put in our 30-nickle stuff (recently during practice) and I wouldn't let (defensive coordinator) Don (Brown) run that because I didn't think our offense was ready to pick all that stuff up," Friedgen said. "I didn't want, in a regular scrimmage, to get where we turned a guy free and he blows a back up and we get a guy hurt.
Sophomores Demetrius Hartsfield, A.J. Francis and Darin Drakeford led the defensive effort.
Hartsfield had scrimmage highs in tackles (7) and sacks (2), while Francis had five stops, including 1 1/2 sacks, and Drakeford had six tackles.
The Terps will hold one practice Tuesday, hitting the on-campus fields in the evening.
Terp Notes:
Scrimmage Notes: The first three possessions started at the offense's 5-yard line, the next five started at the 25-yard line and the final 11 at midfield ... back up punter Ted Townsley averaged just 34.6 yards on three punts, but two of them landed inside the 5-yard line ... Da'Rel Scott not only looked sharp in the scrimmage, but he also had an impressive catch-and-run in the situational third-down portion of the practice. He took a swing pass from Jamarr Robinson in the right flat, cut back against the defense and raced into the end zone for a 45-yard score ... senior LB Alex Wujciak sat out the scrimmage ... the Terps have been hit by the injury bug at tight end, though none appear long term. Will Yeatman (finger) and Lansford Watson (knee) are out of action. Devonte Campbell (concussion) and Ryan Schlothauer (hamstring) were injured Monday, but aren't expected to miss much time. The Terps ended the scrimmage with just two healthy tight ends - sophomore Matt Furstenburg and redshirt freshman Dave Stinebaugh. Furstenburg made the most of the opportunity in the scrimmage hauling in two passes for 34 yards.
Positional Battles: For the moment, Justin Lewis appears to have moved a little ahead of Bennett Fulper for the starting right guard position, though both are likely to see significant action this season. "Right now it looks like Justin Lewis is taking control there," Friedgen said. "I think he played pretty good today. I noticed (offensive line coach) Tom (Brattan) left Fulper mostly with the second team today ... junior Trenton Hughes and redshirt freshman Dexter McDougle are battling for the starting cornerback spot opposite Cameron Chism. "That's heating up," Friedgen said. "Hughes got beat a couple times Saturday. I wanted to see how he played today. That's a tight race right now. Trenton's been playing very focused. He's giving tremendous effort. I think when he gets in the (scrimmages) he just loses some of his focus and his technique. That's what he has to get better at. In practice he's been playing really well."
