COLLEGE PARK, Md. - A week after the Maryland offense controlled the first scrimmage, the defense held the upper hand in the second and final full scrimmage of the preseason Monday at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium.

Two defensive scores - one on a 21-yard interception return by Dexter McDougle and the other on a 22-yard fumble return by Trenton Hughes - highlighted a sound performance by the defense in the 125-play scrimmage which featured possessions at the offense's 5- and 25-yard line, midfield and defense's 20-yard line (red zone).

"It was a good, tough scrimmage," said head coach Ralph Friedgen. "I think the defense got the better of the offense today...I think the offense had four shots in the red zone and the best they did was kick a field goal. So I think defense definitely dominated the scrimmage today."

The offense wasn't completely shut down, however. Da'Rel Scott looks to be back to his all-league form. The senior had 10 carries for a scrimmage-high 73 yards, including a 50-yard touchdown where he burst through the line.

Jamarr Robinson and Danny O'Brien took the majority of reps at quarterback and both impressed Friedgen at times. Robinson was 9 of 14 for 102 yards, a touchdown and an interception, while O'Brien was 19 of 34 for 179 yards.

"I thought Danny O'Brien did some good things today," said Friedgen. "Jamarr (Robinson) threw an interception (that was returned) for a touchdown. I thought Jamarr looked pretty sharp in the 7-on-7 before the scrimmage, and he did some good things in the scrimmage. I have to look (at the tape) and see how that all turned out. We just didn't put the ball in the end zone a lot. That's the thing."

Maryland's tight end corps, a group that has suffered through a number of injuries this preseason, looked very strong.

Redshirt freshman Dave Stinebaugh led all receivers with four receptions for 53 yards and sophomore Matt Furstenburg had three receptions for 50 yards. Furstenburg also caught a touchdown pass on a 16-yard screen from Robinson. Six of the seven receptions by the two tight ends resulted in first downs.

Defensively, Friedgen mentioned a number of players that had standout scrimmages. Ryan Donohue, a reserve linebacker, led all tacklers with 10 while seeing time at both the "Will" and "Mike" linebacker positions.

"To me, we were just talking in the staff meeting, (Ryan's) becoming pretty valuable because he can play either (position), said Friedgen. "I think he's much improved from where he was last year."

Defensive tackle Zachariah Kerr also had a good scrimmage. The sophomore made seven tackles, five of which were unassisted, and Friedgen described him as being "all over the place."

Linebacker Demetrius Hartsfield and defensive back Michael Carter were among the leaders in tackles, chipping in nine and seven, respectively. Two of Hartsfield's tackles were for loss. Freshman defensive back Desmond Kearse had a scrimmage-best 2.5 of the defense's eight sacks.

The Terps return to the field Tuesday evening when they will hold a single session at the on-campus practice facility.

Scrimmage Notes: There were 24 possessions in the scrimmage with the ball starting in a variety of spots (2 at offense's 5-yard line, 11 at offense's 25-yard line, 4 at midfield, five at the defense's 25-yard line and 2 in the two-minute drill) ... the defense scored its two touchdowns on the third and fourth possessions of the scrimmage, with drive's starting at the offense's 25-yard line ... the first four scores of the scrimmage came with the No. 1 offense and defense squaring off against each other ... Devin Burns had a 22-yard TD scamper engineering the No. 3 offense against the No. 3 defense ... three of Maryland's true freshmen defenders had solid outings. Along with Desmond Kearse's scrimmage-best 2.5 sacks, David Mackall had six tackles and Matt Robinson had two stops. "I thought (David) Mackall did some good things today,' Friedgen said. "I thought (Matt) Robinson showed up and made some physical plays today; big kid back there. Definitely his stock went up today. I haven't seen his coverage but I know he had some big hits." ... the Terps had a good day punting and rough day place-kicking. Travis Baltz boomed two punts (58.0 average), but was just 1-for-5 on field goal/long PATs. Nick Ferrara had a 44-yard punt, but went 3 of 6 on FG/long extra points.
