COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 6 Maryland men's soccer concluded its preseason with a win, 2-1, Saturday night against Georgetown in front of a crowd of 3,018 at Ludwig Field.
Matt Kassel picked up his second goal of the preseason when his strike from 19 yards in the fifth minute blasted past Georgetown keeper Matt Brutto to his right. Jason Herrick was awarded the assist on the play. Patrick Mullins tacked on the Terrapin lead at 72:03 with a midrange diving header off a beautifully-served ball from Doug Rodkey.
Georgetown slipped in its lone score with 53 seconds remaining in the match. The Terps outshot the Hoyas 18-9 in the match and showcased a balanced attack with nine players accounting for those shots.
"We showed good energy and commitment throughout the game," head coach Sasho Cirovski said. "I thought our defensive and attack looked sharp in the first half. The crowd was great...it's always good to see the students return to campus."
Maryland officially kicks off the 2010 campaign when it plays host to No. 24 Michigan State next Friday at 7:30 p.m.
