    First-and-10...
    • The University of Maryland, under the direction of 10th-year head coach Ralph Friedgen, opens football season No. 118 Monday when it plays the U.S. Naval Academy at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, though it will be considered a home game for the Terps. The teams are meeting for the first time since 2005. Neither team is ranked, though the Midshipmen received votes in both the preseason AP and USA Today polls. Kickoff is set for 4:01 p.m. ET.
    • Maryland hopes the return of a number of key performers from last season will help it battle for the ACC Atlantic Division crown and reach postseason play for the seventh time in the last 10 seasons. The Terrapins, who have been to six bowl games under Friedgen, return 51 letterwinners, including 12 offensive and defensive starters, all four special teams performers and eight players who have earned all-conference and/or All-America honors.
    • Junior wide receiver Torrey Smith and senior running back Da'Rel Scott headline the seven returning starters on offense under third-year coordinator and assistant head coach James Franklin. Smith is one of the most dynamic players in the country. He ranked sixth nationally in all-purpose yards (182.7 per game) and posted 61 catches last season. Smith, a Biletnikoff Award candidate, highlights a deep receiving corps which also possesses Adrian Cannon, who had 44 catches in 2009, and four others who have started. Scott played in just seven games a year ago due to injury, but was a first team All-ACC pick in 2008 and looked to be back in that form during the preseason. Junior Jamarr Robinson is the new starting quarterback after playing in most of the final four games a year ago. The athleic signal-caller will be protected by a relatively young, but a more experienced and cohesive offensive line. C Paul Pinegar, LG Andrew Gonnella and RT R.J. Dill are the returning starters, but LT Justin Gilbert and RG Justin Lewis played extensively last season. Pinegar has the most experience among the group having played in 24 games, including 12 starts at three positions.
    • A two-time All-ACC performer, senior Alex Wujciak headlines a defense under second-year coordinator Don Brown, which returns seven of its top 10 tacklers from last season, and linebacker unit which is among the best in the league. Wujciak, who is listed among the preseason candidates for five national awards (see list on pg. 2), tallied 131 tackles in 2009, ranking eighth nationally in that category (10.9 per game). LB Adrian Moten, the only junior team captain last season, has been a playmaker throughout his career. He led the team in tackles for loss (9.0) and sacks (6.0) last year. Demetrius Hartsfield earned freshman All-ACC honors from his linebacker spot despite playing with a broken hand for a number of games. A.J. Francis, a 2009 freshman All-America choice, is the lone returning starter on the line, but nine other letterwinners are back up front. Junior Cameron Chism, one of five returning defensive starters, will be called on to lead the secondary. Chism started 10 games a year ago when he posted a team-best four interceptions. Senior Antwine Perez and junior Kenny Tate are seasoned, having played significantly at safety, but will be regular starters for the first time.
    • Special teams should be a strength for the Terps with all the top performers back. Punter Travis Baltz was a 2008 first team All-ACC pick, place-kicker Nick Ferrara was a 2009 freshman All-American and Torrey Smith was one of the top kick returners in the country last season, posting an ACC single-season record 1,309 yards. Tony Logan is back as the No. 1 punt returner as is long snapper Tim Downs. Ferrara has missed time during preseason camp, so Baltz has taken on the dual role of punting and place-kicking. Baltz has not kicked in a game since high school, but he did serve as the No. 2 place-kicker in 2007.

    Quick Hitters...
    • Maryland is 71-44-2 (.615) all-time in season openers. The team is 6-3 in season-opening games under Ralph Friedgen, including wins in five of its last six.
    • The Terrapins open the season with an independent on neutral turf for the third time in the last nine years (Navy, 2005; Notre Dame, 2002) but for just the fourth time since 1922.
    • Monday's game marks the 21st meeting between Maryland and Navy and just the second matchup since 1965. The Terps downed Navy, 23-20, in a 2005, but the Midshipmen hold a 14-6 lead in the series.
    • The Terps have played 48 games in their history in Baltimore and have an all-time record of 25-16-7 in the city, with the first contest taking place in 1897 against Baltimore Medical at Electric Park. They have played 11 games in the modern era (since 1950) there, posting a 4-5-2 mark, including 2-2 record against Navy in that time (2-3 against Navy all-time in Baltimore).
    • The Terrapins return over 70 percent of the offensive and defensive two-deep from the end of 2009. There are 17 of 22 offensive players back and 14 of 22 defenders. In addition, all six special teams starters (KR, PR, PK, P, LS, H) are back in uniform.
    • The Terps have just eight seniors (Adrian Cannon, Paul Pinegar, Da'Rel Scott, LaQuan Williams, Drew Gloster, Adrian Moten, Alex Wujciak, and Antwine Perez) listed among the 44 players on the current offensive and defensive two-deep. In addition, senior Travis Baltz is the first-team punter.
    • The Terps have 26 offensive and defensive players on the current roster who have started at least once in their career.
    • There are six bowl teams from last year which appear on the Terps' 2010 schedule: Navy (Texas Bowl), West Virginia (Konica Minolta Gator Bowl), Clemson (Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl), Boston College (Emerald Bowl), Miami (Champs Sports Bowl), and Florida State (Konica Minolta Gator Bowl).
Torrey Smith has a school-record three career kickoff returns for touchdowns and is one of only two active players in the ACC with more than one (2 by T.J. Graham , N.C. State). Tyron Carrier of Houston (5) is the only player in the nation with more kickoff returns for touchdowns than Smith.
Alex Wujciak has averaged 10.6 tackles per game in his career which is tops in the nation among active players.

    Green Team...
Maryland played 24 freshmen (10 true/14 redshirts) last season, which was the most during Ralph Friedgen's first nine seasons. The Terps played 20 freshmen in both the 2001 and 2004 seasons. Last year's freshmen are now sophomores, but the Terps are still relatively young, though more experienced. Of the 111 players on the roster, 67 are freshmen or sophomores, but just 16 are seniors. Maryland also had a relatively low senior class (14) last season.

    Coaching Staff At-A-Glance...
Ralph Friedgen is entering his 10th season as Maryland's head coach. Friedgen has a 66-46 (.589) record and has led the Terps to six bowl games. He has won a school record four bowl games and his winning percentage ranks fourth in Maryland history. In addition, he is the 19th-winningest coach (by percentage) in ACC history.
    • Assistant head coach/offensive coordinator James Franklin was named the eventual successor to Friedgen in February, 2009. Franklin, 38, has spent the better part of this decade on the Maryland staff. He served as the wide receivers coach from 2000 to 2004, which spanned Friedgen's first four seasons. During that time, Franklin established himself as one of the nation's top recruiters. Rivals.com ranked Franklin as one of the nation's top 25 recruiters for two of those first four years and tapped him again last season.
Don Brown is in his second year as defensive coordinator. Brown, who runs an attacking-style defense, served as head coach of the University of Massachusetts-Amherst the previous five years which included a trip to the 2006 NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) title game. During his tenure, UMass maintained one of the top defensive units in the nation. The Minutemen finished among the top 20 in total defense in three of his five seasons (third in 2005; 20th in 2006; 14th in 2007).

    Military Men...
The Terps have one player - reserve linebacker Nick Peterson - who spent time at the U.S. Naval Academy. Peterson was in Annapolis for his true freshman season (2007). The coaching staff has no ties to Navy, but three coaches have worked at some institution which has a military setting.
Ralph Friedgen was an assistant coach at The Citadel from 1973-79.
    • Linebackers coach Al Seamonson was at Army (1985-86) before spending 13 years (1987-99) at The Citadel.
    • Defensive line coach Dave Sollazzo played at The Citadel from 1973-76 and coached the Bulldogs from 1989-98.

    Maryland-Navy Series History...
    • Maryland and Navy will face off for the 21st time Monday with the Midshipmen owning a 14-6 advantage in the series which started in 1905.
    • When the series began, what is currently the University of Maryland at College Park was known as Maryland Agricultural College. The "Farmers" as they were dubbed by local press in the first four games (and Aggies after) lost each of their five games before dropping two more as Maryland State. The first game played by the University of Maryland as it is presently known took place in 1930.
    • The two schools, despite being a mere 30 miles apart, have met just once since 1965. Until that point, the two Mid-Atlantic foes had met eight times between 1950 and `65.
    • From 1931-1965, the series was competitive with Maryland taking five of 11 games. The all-time series record, however, is somewhat lopsided with the Terrapins having lost each of the first eight games of the series (from 1905-1930).
    • The last time Maryland and Navy met before the matchup in 2005, Ralph Friedgen was on the Terp freshman team and for the 1964 game, he was in attendance as a Maryland recruit.
    • The series has been played four times in Baltimore (1931, `32, `51, `59, `05) with Navy winning three of those contests. The Terps' first win in Charm City came in 1951, a 40-21 victory in a campaign that saw the Terrapins go a perfect 10-0 en route to blasting No. 1 and heavily-favored Tennessee, 28-13, in the Sugar Bowl. Maryland also won 23-20 in 2005.

    Maryland-Navy - The Last Time...
Sept. 5, 2005 (AP) - Sam Hollenbach threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Drew Weatherly with 61 seconds left, capping a frantic 82-yard drive that carried Maryland past Navy 23-20. Hollenbach went 19-for-30 for 217 yards, and Mario Merrills ran for 149 yards on 30 carries to help Maryland recover from an early 11-point deficit in the opener for both teams. After a 6-yard touchdown run by Matt Hall gave Navy a 20-15 lead with 4:43 left, Hollenbach brought the Terrapins back. The key play came just before the touchdown, when Lance Ball took a short pass on a fourth-and-8 from the Navy 31 and slipped several tackles during a 20-yard gain. Hollenbach then fired the winning pass to Weatherly in the middle of the end zone before Merrills ran in the conversion. A crowd of 67,809 nearly filled the Baltimore Ravens' stadium for the first meeting between the teams since 1965.

    Terps Add Florida Transfer...
One of the most highly sought after players in the 2010 recruiting class has joined the Terps. Adrian Coxson, a transfer from the University of Florida, began practicing with the team last week. Coxson will sit out this season and be eligible to play in 2011. The Baltimore native is looking forward to getting back on the field. "It's close to home and it's a good program with great coaches," Coxson said of his decision to come to Maryland. "I believe Maryland is really on the rise and I think we're going to have a great season." A four-star prospect who was rated the No. 19 wide receiver in the nation according to Scout.com and the seventh-best player in the state of Maryland by Rivals.com, Coxson had over 1,280 yards rushing with 11 touchdowns and 650 yards passing and eight touchdowns as a wildcat quarterback in 2009. Coxson averaged 12.08 yards per carry as a senior and had more than 200 rushing yards in four games. He finished his junior season with 40 catches for 987 yards and 12 touchdowns. Coxson was a 2009 Baltimore Sun first team All-Metro selection and a second team All-Metro pick in 2008.

    Crab Bowl Trophy...
The Touchdown Club of Annapolis will present the Crab Bowl Trophy to the winner of the game and for all subsequent meetings. The trophy will be presented to the winning team in the locker room. The TouchdownClub of Annapolis, founded in 1954, has an extensive history with both Navy and Maryland, honoring both teams at its annual banquet.

No Stranger to the Triple Option...
Don Brown, who has over 30 years coaching experience, is one of the more innovative defensive minds in college football. Now in his second year running his attacking-style defense, Brown has some experience defending the Navy triple option. As UMass head coach (2004-08), he faced the Midshipmen in 2006 and his Minutemen nearly pulled the upset. Navy was forced into five turnovers and posted 289 yards of total offense before prevailing, 21-20. Brown was also the UMass defensive coordinator when the Minuteman faced Georgia Southern (led by former Navy coach Paul Johnson) in the 1998 and 1999 I-AA playoffs. UMass defeated the Eagles, 55-43, in the 1998 National Championship game and lost 38-21 the following season, in the NCAA Quarterfinals.

    Holding Onto the Ball...
For Maryland to be successful this season it must do a better job of holding onto the ball. The Terps struggled overall in the turnover department in 2009, but improved during the latter half of the year. The Terps were tied for 97th in the nation in turnover margin (-0.55 per game), but were +7.0 over the last five games. The defense forced 10 turnovers in the last five games (also one on special teams vs. N.C. State) after inducing seven in the first seven contests. A key to the second-half improvement was Jamarr Robinson who did not thrown an interception in his 85 pass attempts which all came in the final four games of the year.
