COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The time is here to start marking your calendars with the 2010-11 schedule of games for the University of Maryland women's basketball team. Head coach Brenda Frese and the Terrapins are back and reloaded with a team of young talent and no seniors. Go along for the ride as the Terps seek to re-establish Maryland as one of the nation's premier teams.
Throughout the week umterps.com will be releasing details on the upcoming schedule. A full schedule release will be announced in early September. Fans can also follow Coach Frese on Facebook and Twitter (twitter.com/umdwbb) for schedule information and fun facts about the team and competition.
DON'T FORGET fans can order season tickets now at umterps.com! Terps fans can also get their ticket packages for the First and Second Rounds of the 2011 NCAA Tournament hosted right here at Comcast Center Sunday, March 20 and Tuesday, March 22.
Up first on October 15 is Maryland's annual "Maryland Madness" celebration to kick-off the basketball season. It is sure to be a high-energy, fun-filled showcase event with big crowd on hand at Comcast Center to meet and get a look at both the women and men's 2010-11 basketball teams.
In November are a pair of exhibition games with institutions from Washington D.C.- Gallaudet University (Tuesday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m.) and the University of District of Columbia (Sunday Nov. 7 at 2 p.m.). These exhibitions give the Terrapins a chance to have dress rehearsals before starting their run on the big stage.
Fans will see, for the first time, the No. 2 recruiting class in the nation strut their stuff as well as enjoy the strong presence of returning players such as Lynetta Kizer, Tianna Hawkins and Diandra Tchatchouang.
Maryland kicks of the season with their home opener on Saturday, Nov. 13 against Monmouth. Last year the Hawks finished 16-14, being led by 2010 Northeast Conference Rookie of the Year Alysha Womack. This will be the fourth time the Terps and Hawks have met. Maryland leads in the all-time series, 3-0. The two teams last came together in 2005 in West Long Branch, N.J.
The Terps then take a quick bus ride into Washington D.C. on Tuesday, Nov. 16 for a meeting with Georgetown who finished last year ranked top-20. The two squads haven't met since the 2003-04 season, when the Terps used overtime to take a 66-63 victory over the Hoyas at the Surf `n Slam Tournament in San Diego, California. Maryland hasn't visited the McDonough Arena since the 1985-86 season. The Hoyas return a strong cast from last year's team that was the most successful in school history, having won 26 games and advancing to the NCAA Tournament.
Before heading on the road for their Thanksgiving tournament, the Terrapins host two local schools at Comcast. First up is Towson on Thursday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. followed by American that Sunday, Nov. 21 at 2 p.m. Maryland faced both universities on the road last season.
Rounding out the month of November is the East Carolina Lady Pirate Invitational in Greenville, N.C. Tournament play commences on Friday, Nov. 26 at 6:30 p.m. with the Terps facing Massachusetts. Maryland and UMass have met only once, in 2004 at Comcast Center. The following Saturday the Terps take on East Carolina at 4 p.m. This will be just the second meeting between the two schools. They saw each other in the second round of the 2010 Women's National Invitation Tournament hosted by Maryland.
