COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The 2010 Maryland men's soccer team doesn't officially report to campus for a week, but let's take a look at the top 10 reasons Terp fans should be excited for the upcoming season.
A GRAND GAME
The Maryland men's soccer team will play its 1,000th game in program history when the Terps take on George Mason Tuesday, Sept. 21.
RODKEY RETURNS
Maryland senior Doug Rodkey returns for a sixth season after an injury sidelined the midfielder in his sophomore and senior campaigns. He will be aiming to be the first male athlete in Maryland history to win three NCAA championships.
TV TIME
Once again, Maryland men's soccer nation will be on the big stage as Ludwig Field plays host to the Fox Soccer Channel College Game of the Week Friday, Oct. 1, when the Terps welcome Duke for an Atlantic Coast Conference showdown in College Park.
ROCKIN' RECRUITS
Head coach Sasho Cirovksi and his staff has assembled one of the top recruiting classes in the nation. In addition to Patrick Mullins and Gordon Murie, who enrolled early this spring, Maryland will also welcome Marquez Fernandez, Tsotleho "Sunny" Jane, Jereme Raley, and Helge Leikvang this fall.
PART OF HISTORY
Looking to follow the Terps on the road this season? Look no further than the Loyola (Md.) match Sept. 14. Maryland will take on the Greyhounds as they unveil their new stadium for the first time.
NO EARLY EXITS
While departed seniors Kevin Tangney and Drew Yates were both selected in the Major League Soccer SuperDraft, the Terps did not have anyone leave early for the January draft. In total, Maryland returns nine starters from last season.
MACMATH BACK FOR THIRD SEASON
NSCAA All-American goalie Zac MacMath is back for his third season between the pipes in 2010. The junior is fresh off a Milk Cup championship in Northern Ireland as a member of the U-20 national team.
EXCITING GIVEAWAYS!
Maryland will have an array of promotions at its home contests this season, including Capital One Tailgate, `Red Out the Blue Devils', D.C. United nights and Pepsi Max samplings. Stay logged onto umterps.com for a complete list of promotions.
A HEALTHY TOWNSEND
After missing the majority of the 2009 season, junior Casey Townsend, one of the most prolific goal scorers in all of college soccer, returns to the starting lineup in great shape this season. He will team up with First Team All-ACC selection Jason Herrick up front.
GREAT HOME SLATE
In addition to its always challenging conference schedule which features home matches against NCAA Tournament participants N.C. State, Wake Forest and Duke, the Terps' non-conference slate is highlighted by contests against Michigan State (Sept. 3) and Connecticut (Oct. 5).
