COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland volleyball team hopes to maintain its 8game winning streak on the road in Philadelphia, Pa., at the Villanova Classic starting Friday, Sep. 17. The Terps will first play host Villanova (8-3) followed by William & Mary (4-5) and Long Island (1-8).
In the Spring Hill Suites at Arundel Mills Terrapin Invitational, Maryland's last tournament play, the Terps won all three of its matches, blanking the Penn Quakers and Fairfield Stags in three sets each, before losing only one set to the Tulane Green Wave.
Junior Lisa Scott earned tournament MVP honors, thanks in part to her career-high .750 attack percentage. Sophomore Remy McBain and senior Michelle Kenning also provided All-Tournament performances, thanks to McBain's season-high 45 assists and career-high 14 digs and Kenning's nine kills and career-high five digs.
Head coach Tim Horsmon's squad starts the Villanova Classic against the Wildcats at 7 p.m. on Friday. Villanova is riding a seven-game win streak of its own, including a 3-2 victory over 2009 NCAA qualifier Penn. The Wildcats return all but three players from last year's team, which went 16-13 and 5-9 in the Big East. Juniors Kim Maroon and Maggie Mergen earned all-conference honors last season and should strengthen the Wildcats on both sides of the ball.
On Saturday, Sep. 18 at 11 a.m., the Terps face off against William & Mary. Last year, the Tribe finished 18-11 and 10-4 in the Colonial Athletic Association. William & Mary returns four starters off of its '09 team, which reached its conference tournament for the third consecutive year. Maryland holds a 14-6 series record over the Tribe.
Later on Saturday, at 5 p.m., Maryland will look to add to its 2-0 series lead over Long Island. The Blackbirds finished 21-14 overall, a perfect 16-0 within the Northeast Conference and qualified for the NCAA tournament, where they faced No. 4 Stanford.
Following the weekend road trip, the Terps will head home for their ACC opener against Boston College on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at the Comcast Pavilion.
