CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -
The Maryland volleyball team fell 3-1 to North Carolina Friday night in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Terps (10-4, 1-1) won the first set 25-23, then lost the second and third 25-12 and 25-13, respectively. Maryland took the lead early in the fourth, but fell 27-25 to the Tar Heels (11-4, 2-0).
As a team, the Terrapins hit a solid .310 in the opening set with 16 kills. With a 24-23 lead, senior Michelle Kenning and junior Lisa Scott combined for a block to nab the set.
With the Terps up 5-4 early in the second set, the Tar Heels went on an 11-point run to take a 15-5 lead. They closed out the set, 25-12. With a 14-11 lead in the third set, North Carolina went on a 12-2 run and eventually took the set 25-13.
In the fourth set, the Terrapins jumped out to the early lead. With the score 11-9 for the Terps, the two teams battled back and forth. Maddi Lee tied the game at 24, then Emily McGee scored for a 25-24 lead for the Heels. Lee and Brittney Grove combined for a block on the following play to tie the score once more. McGee scored the last two points to claim the 3-1 win for the Tar Heels.
Freshman Mary Cushman led the Terrapins with 15 kills, while sophomore Remy McBain set up 33 assists on the night. McBain, Scott and Lee each had six kills and Kenning added five. Freshman Sarah Harper and McBain each had two service aces.
On defense, Bethany Springer led with 17 digs. Harper was just behind her with 16 and McBain had 11. Scott had four assisted blocks and one solo.
