The Maryland volleyball team beat Atlantic Coast Conference opponent North Carolina State 3-1 Saturday night in Raleigh, N.C. The Terps (12-3, 2-1) combined for 14.0 blocks to beat the Wolfpack (10-5, 1-2) in four sets, 25-16, 15-25, 25-18, 25-23.
Six Terrapins notched blocks in the game. Maddi Lee led with six assisted blocks and one solo and Brittney Grove had one solo and five assisted.
Freshman Mary Cushman led with 14 kills on her 32 attacks (.344), while Lisa Scott had 10 kills on her 14 attacks for a clip of .429. Remy McBain had 42 assists on the evening.
In the first set, the Terps took the lead at 5-4 and never looked back. 12 kills and a hitting percentage of .348 gave claimed the first set 25-16.
The Wolfpack jumped out to the lead in the second set. With the score at 8-6, NC State went on an 8-1 run to go ahead 16-7. Alex Smith led the way through the run with three kills.
Down 12-11 in set three, a kill by Kara Bates tied the game and sparked a short run to give the Terrapins a lead. Three straight attack errors by the Wolfpack gave Maryland a 15-12 lead. Cushman's kill closed the set at 25-18.
Maryland held the lead for much of the fourth set. The Wolfpack tied the score at 23 with a block by Smith and Margaret Salata. Alexa Micek's service error put the Terps up 24-23 and a kill by Cushman finalized the set at 25-23.
The Terrapins will head back to North Carolina next week for a matchup at Wake Forest Thursday at 7 p.m. and a game at Duke Friday night at 7 p.m. as well.
