    First-and-10...
    • Coming off its first loss of the season, Maryland rebounded Saturday with a solid 42-28 victory over a pesky FIU squad behind a big-play attack and an opportunistic defense. The Terps, who improved to 3-1 for the sixth time under head coach Ralph Friedgen, scored on four plays over 50 yards (three offensive plays/one on special teams). Maryland now opens Atlantic Coast Conference play Saturday against Duke, which has dropped three in-a-row, but has the 20th-ranked offense in the nation. The Blue Devils are making their first visit to College Park since 2003.
    • The Maryland offense, under third-year coordinator and assistant head coach James Franklin, ranks 34th nationally in scoring (34.5 ppg) and is coming off one of its more balanced performances. Da'Rel Scott (56) and Davin Meggett (76) had long TD runs, and Torrey Smith had a 68-yard TD catch from Danny O'Brien, who completed 18 of 27 passes for 250 yards against FIU (9/25), his first carer start. Scott and Meggett have combined to average 6.8 yards per carry this year, while Smith, one of the most dynamic players in the nation, has a league-best five TD receptions and has averaged 154.0 receiving yards over the last two games. The Biletnikoff Award candidate ranked sixth nationally in all-purpose yards (182.7 per game) last season. O'Brien, the ACC Rookie of the Week, became the first freshman to start at quarterback in 11 years when he subbed for Jamarr Robinson (shoulder) against FIU, which had six sacks the previous week. The o-line, which was reshuffled following a season-ending knee injury to LT Justin Gilbert, surrendered just one sack to FIU and allowed the team to average 6.0 yards per carry. C Paul Pinegar, LG Andrew Gonnella and LT R.J. Dill (moved from RT last week) are the returning starters. Justin Lewis mans the right guard position, with Bennett Fulper rotating in at that spot and center. Pete DeSouza made his first career start against FIU, opening the game at right tackle.
    • The linebacker corps, including two-time All-ACC performer Alex Wujciak, anchors the defense under second-year coordinator Don Brown. The Terps rank 40th nationally in scoring defense (19.0 ppg) and have the best red-zone defense in the ACC. Despite surrendering 377.8 yards per game (ninth in the ACC), the Terps are allowing opponents to gain just 4.7 yards per play (fifth in the league). Over the last six quarters of action, that number drops to 4.4 ypp. A key to the defensive effort is the production of the linebackers. The Terps possess three of the top five tacklers in the ACC. Wujciak, who is listed among the preseason candidates for five national awards, ranks tied for second in the league and sixth nationally in tackles (12.2 pg). LB Adrian Moten, a playmaker throughout his career (team-best 9.0 TFLs and 6.0 sacks last year), ranks tied for fourth in the ACC in stops (8.5 pg) with Demetrius Hartsfield, a 2009 freshman All-ACC pick. Hartsfield had a game- and career-high 13 tackles vs. FIU. A.J. Francis, a 2009 freshman All-America choice, is coming off one of his more productive games, posting a career-best 11 stops vs. the Golden Panthers from his nose tackle position. Joe Vellano is among the more productive linemen in the ACC. He ranks seventh in tackles for loss (1.5 pg) and tied for eighth in sacks (0.75 pg). Junior CB Cameron Chism, one of five returning defensive starters, posted a team-best four interceptions in 2009 and ranks second in the league in passes defended (1.5 pg). Senior Antwine Perez and junior Kenny Tate are seasoned veterans in their first year as the starting safeties. Tate is tied for 12th in the ACC in tackles (7.5 pg) and tied for third in forced fumbles (0.50 pg).
    • Special teams should be a strength with all the top performers back and the Terps have demonstrated that over the first four games. Travis Baltz, a 2008 first team All-ACC punter, has handled both kicking chores with an injury to place-kicker Nick Ferrara, a 2009 freshman All-American. Baltz has connected on four of his five FG attempts and is averaging 43.7 yards per punt (27th nationally). Tony Logan is off to a fast start as the No. 1 punt returner. He had a career-best 128 return yards vs. Morgan State (9/11), had an 85-yard punt return for a score vs. FIU (9/25) and is averaging 25.2 ypr (third in the country). Torrey Smith was one of the top kick returners in the country last season, posting an ACC single-season record 1,309 yards.

    Quick Hitters....
    • Maryland has won at least three of its first four games six times (2001-02, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010) under Ralph Friedgen.
    • The Terps stand 30-25-1 all-time in conference home openers, including 6-3 under Ralph Friedgen, having won their last four. Maryland is meeting Duke in its ACC opener for the first time since 2004 (55-21 win by Terps at Duke). The Terps haven't faced the Blue Devils at home in their ACC opener since 1994.
    • Maryland is facing Duke for the second time since 2004 (also last season). The teams met each season from 1972 to 2004.
    • The Terps lead the all-time series with the Blue Devils, 30-19, and have won nine of the last 11 meetings, including five of the last six. Maryland has a 14-6 record in College Park.
    • Only three players in the country (Justin Blackmon - 8, Oklahoma State; Kaloha Pilares - 7, Hawai'i; Lyle Leong - 6, Texas Tech) have more receiving touchdowns than Torrey Smith (5).
    • Smith's 23.7 yards-per-catch average is tops in the nation among receivers with at least 10 catches.
    • Smith has a school-record three career kickoff returns for touchdowns and is one of only two active players in the ACC with more than one (2 by T.J. Graham , N.C. State). Tyron Carrier of Houston (5) is the only player in the nation with more kickoff returns for touchdowns than Smith.
    • Butkus Award candidate Alex Wujciak has averaged 10.8 tackles per game in his career which is second in the nation among active players.
    • The Terrapins, who have been to six bowl games under Friedgen, have 51 letterwinners, including 12 offensive and defensive starters, all four special teams performers back from 2009. There are eight Terps on the roster who have earned all-conference and/or All-America honors.
    • The Terrapins have over 70 percent of the offensive and defensive two-deep back from the end of 2009. There are 17 of 22 offensive players back and 14 of 22 defenders. In addition, all six special teams starters (KR, PR, PK, P, LS, H) are back in uniform.
    • The Terps have just eight seniors (Adrian Cannon, Paul Pinegar, Da'Rel Scott, LaQuan Williams, Drew Gloster, Adrian Moten, Alex Wujciak, and Antwine Perez) listed among the 44 players on the current offensive and defensive two-deep. In addition, senior Travis Baltz is the first-team punter and place-kicker.
    • There are six bowl teams from last year which appear on the Terps' 2010 schedule: Navy (Texas Bowl), West Virginia (Konica Minolta Gator Bowl), Clemson (Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl), Boston College (Emerald Bowl), Miami (Champs Sports Bowl), and Florida State (Konica Minolta Gator Bowl).

    Streaks and Trends....
Alex Wujciak has started a team-best 29 straight games, all at Mike LB. Torrey Smith's 10 straight starts leads the offense.
    • Wujciak has reached double-digit tackles in 20 of his last 25 games.
    • The Terps have recorded 12 interceptions over the last nine games.
    • The Terps started virtually the same lineup in the first three games before shuffling vs. FIU (see pg. 30). The offensive and defensive starters were identical against Navy (9/6) and Morgan State (9/11), with LaQuan Williams subbing for RB Haroon Brown vs. WVU (9/18) as Maryland went with a three-receiver set on the first play. Injuries caused a couple of changes vs. FIU (9/25). Danny O'Brien started at QB, Pete DeSouza opened the game at right tackle, with R.J. Dill moving to left tackle. In addition, Desmond Kearse started as a third safety, becoming the first Terp true freshman defensive player to start since Jeremy Navarre (vs. Boston College, 11/19/05). Kearse is also the first true freshman DB to start since Domonique Foxworth (vs. NC State, 11/17/01).

    85 Goes For 85...
Tony Logan showed Saturday why he is one of the top punt returners in the nation. The junior, who wears No. 85, had his third return over 50 yards this season, an 85-yarder for a TD in the second quarter against FIU, marking the first Maryland punt return for a TD since the 2004 Gator Bowl. The 85-yard return is the second-longest on record in Maryland history (90-yard TD by Dick Nolan in 1953). Logan had six punt returns in the game, totaling 135 yards, his second 100-yard game of the season (also 128 yards vs. Morgan State, 9/11). Logan leads the ACC and ranks third nationally with 25.2 yards per return. Logan's 14.0 yard-per-return career average ranks third in the FBS among active players. That mark is also second in school history (see chart on pg. 20). His season total of 327 yards is already sixth on the Maryland all-time single-season list.

    Freshman Under Center...
Starting the first game of his collegiate career, Danny O'Brien went 18 of 27 for 250 yards with two TDs and no interceptions. O'Brien was the first freshman quarterback to start for Maryland since Latrez Harrison (11/20/99) and just the fifth in school history. Ken Mastrole was the first freshman in school history to start at quarterback (vs. West Virginia, 9/28/96). Randall Jones was the first true freshman signal-caller to start (vs. Clemson, 10/10/98). Two freshmen started the following season. Calvin McCall, a redshirt freshman, started the season opener at Temple (9/2/99) before giving way to Harrison, a true freshman, in the Florida State game (11/13/99). O'Brien's 250 passing yards are the most by any Maryland freshman in his first start. In fact, he more than doubled the previous best mark (100 by McCall vs. Temple in 1999).

    Select Company...
Junior Torrey Smith had season highs in receptions (eight) and receiving yards (159), including a 68-yard touchdown, in the win over FIU (9/25). The junior has consecutive 100-yard receiving games and has caught five TD passes in the last three games. His 308 receiving yards in the last two contests are the most by a Terp over a two-game span since Jermaine Lewis had 394 in 1995 (205 vs. Duke, 9/23; 189 vs. Georgia Tech, 9/28). With Smith's 193 all-purpose yards (also 34 kickoff return yards) against FIU, he became just the second player in school history to accumulate more than 4,000 all-purpose yards in his career, joining LaMont Jordan (4,960). Smith's eight receptions brought his career total to 100, tying him for 10th all-time in school history.

    Sudden Change...
After going 41 games without scoring via a fumble or interception (Erin Henderson in 2006 vs. Virginia), Maryland has registered a defensive touchdown in three of the last eight contests. Demetrius Hartsfield's pick-six in the second quarter of the Morgan State game (9/11) was Maryland's first defensive score since Alex Wujciak scored on a 70-yard interception return on 11/14/09 at NC State. One week later, Jared Harrell fell on a fumble in the end zone vs. Virginia Tech (11/21). FS Kenny Tate nearly made it four TDs in seven games. Tate had a 53-yard interception return vs. WVU (9/18/10).

    Forcing the Issue...
Maryland's defense has been a more aggressive unit through four games this season than at the same point last year. So far the Terps have forced seven fumbles, recovering five of those. They have also picked off four passes. After four games a year ago, the first under coordinator Don Brown, the Terrapins forced a fumble, recovered one and picked off a pair of passes.

    Holding Onto the Ball...
For Maryland to be successful this season it must do a better job of holding onto the ball than it did in 2009. So far the Terps have continued where they left off last season. The Terps ranked 97th in the FBS (-0.50 pg) in turnover margin in 2009, but improved during the latter half of the year, going +7.0 over the last five games. The defense forced 10 turnovers in the last five games (also one on special teams vs. NC State) after inducing seven in the first seven contests. A key to the second-half improvement was Jamarr Robinson who did not thrown an interception in his 85 pass attempts which all came in the final four games of the year. This season, Maryland is second in the ACC and 10th nationally in turnover margin (+1.50 pg). The Terps have been on the plus side of the turnovers in all four games this season. Maryland did not turn the ball over against FIU (9/25), a team which forced six turnovers the week before against Texas A&M.

    Defense Tightens in Red Zone...
The Maryland defense has been at its best when the opposing team reaches the red zone. The Terps lead the ACC and are tied second nationally by allowing opponents to score just 55.6 percent of the time when they get inside the 20. Out of 18 trips to the red zone, Maryland has stopped the opponent eight times, including three fumble recoveries, one interception and two turnovers-on-downs. Maryland did its best work against Navy (9/6), stopping the Midshipmen on five of its seven trips to the red zone.

What to Look for Vs. Duke and Beyond...
    • The Terps are seeking their 200th win in Byrd Stadium.
    • With one more win, Ralph Friedgen will become just the 13th head coach in ACC history with 70 career overall victories.
    • Maryland and Duke are on the opposite end of the spectrum in terms of turnovers. The Terps rank 10th nationally in turnover margin (+1.50 per game), while the Blue Devils are tied for 100th (-1.00 pg).
    • Senior RB Da'Rel Scott needs 98 rushing yards to become the 10th back in school history to 2,000 in his career. In addition, he can also become the 10th player in school history with 3,000 career all-purpose yards with another 136.
    • Scott ranks 11th on the Maryland career rushing list (1,902). He needs 11 yards to reach Billy Lovett (1966-68) who is in 12th place.
    • Senior LB Alex Wujciak needs 17 more tackles to reach the top 15 on the Maryland career list. Kevin Walker (330, 1985-87) currently occupies the 14th spot.
    • Senior LB Adrian Moten, who has 14 career sacks, needs one more to reach the top 15 on the Maryland all-time list.
Torrey Smith ranks second in school history in career all-purpose yardage (4,127). He needs to average 105 yards a game the rest of the season to pass Lamont Jordan (1997-00) who has a school-record 4,960 all-purpose yards.
    • Smith, who holds the Maryland career kickoff return yards mark (2,514), needs 141 yards to set the ACC mark. Smith is currently third while Brandon Tate of North Carolina (2,688/2005-08) holds the record.
    • Smith has 100 career catches which is tied for 10th in school history. Ferrell Edmunds (1984-87) is ninth with 101 catches. He also has 1,515 receiving yards, also ranking 10th on the Maryland career list. Smith needs 37 yards to reach Guilian Gary (1998-01) who is ninth.

    Duke At-A-Glance...
    • Duke enters Saturday's matchup 1-3 after losing three straight contests to Wake Forest, No. 1 Alabama and Army.
    • The Blue Devil passing attack has proved to be one of the best in the ACC and the nation this season, ranking second and 20th, respectively. Duke has totaled 281.3 yards per game and has nine TDs through the air.
    • Sophomore QB Sean Renfree leads the ACC with 278.2 passing yards per game. Renfree boasts a 62.0 completion percentage with nine TDs.
    • Duke's top receiver Conner Vernon ranks first in the ACC in both receptions (7.0) and receiving yards (112.2) per game. He has totaled 28 receptions for 449 yards this year in addition to three TDs.
    • The Blue Devils have been especially good in the red zone - they have scored on 13 of 13 trips, including nine touchdowns. They are one of only 10 teams in the nation to have come away with points on every trip inside the opponents 20.
    • Desmond Scott leads the ground attack, having run the ball 42 times this season for 272 yards, a 6.5 yards-per-carry average. The sophomore has two touchdowns and ranks eighth in the ACC with 68 rushing yards per game.
    • Linebacker Abraham Kromah leads the Duke defense by averaging 7.8 tackles per game, which is tied for ninth in the ACC.
    • Duke's defense is tied for the league lead with five interceptions this season (also Maryland, Clemson and BC), but the Blue Devils have surrendered 466.2 yards per game of total offense.

    Did You Know?...
Alex Wujciak is the only player in the FBS to post 15 or more tackles in at least two games this year. He had a career-high 18 in the season opener against Navy (9/6) and posted 16 against West Virginia (9/18).
