COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Terrapins completed an efficient 90-minute workout on Thursday amidst scattered showers at the on-campus practice facility in preparation for Saturday's Atlantic Coast Conference opener with Duke.

Maryland is coming off its best offensive performance of the season in terms of total yards gained, racking up 419 yards of total offense in a 42-28 victory over FIU.

The Terps have the opportunity to start 4-1 for the second time in three years and head coach Ralph Friedgen knows this game is important to the team's long term goals.

"To be 4-1 going into the break, we'd have some momentum," Friedgen said after Thursday's workout. "Hopefully we can get healed up a little bit going into the last half of the season. I think going in there 4-1 we'd be feeling good. At 3-2, you're not feeling as good, so it's a very important game."

An important part of that will be quarterback play, and both Danny O'Brien and Jamarr Robinson participated in practice this week after being limited leading up to the FIU game. Either could start on Saturday.

O'Brien, a freshman who made his first collegiate start last week, finished the game 18-of-27 for 250 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. He also did a good job spreading the ball around, targeting eight different receivers in the game, something that impressed Friedgen.

"That should happen if you're going through your reads," said Friedgen. "If you're throwing to the open guy the ball should get to everyone. That's the signal I really want to send. We have some talent at (wide receiver). If you run your routes and get open, the guy is going to get you the ball. I think that makes us tougher to defend, if everyone is contributing and making plays."

The Terps will have to be efficient on offense to keep pace with one of the most potent passing attacks in the ACC.

Duke quarterback Sean Renfree leads the league with 278.2 passing yards per game and has a talented receiving corps to distribute the ball to.

"They have a really good passing attack," said Friedgen. "The ball comes out very fast, very quick. Renfree is very accurate."

Three Duke receivers rank in the top 10 in the ACC, with sophomore Connor Vernon leading the league in both receptions per game (7) and receiving yards per game (112.2). Junior Donovan Varner has 23 receptions for 258 yards and senior Austin Kelly has 19 catches for 209 yards. The trio has combined to catch six of Renfree's nine touchdown passes.

"Preparing for these guys is always a little bit difficult with what they do on the offensive side of the ball," said Friedgen.

But Maryland has a number of playmakers on defense. The starting linebacking corps of Alex Wujciak, Adrian Moten and Demetrius Hartsfield all rank in the top four in the ACC in tackles, and Moten is also tied for third in interceptions (0.50 per game).

No team in the ACC has forced more turnovers than the Terps, who as a defense have five interceptions and five fumble recoveries. Maryland ranks second in the league in turnover margin (+6).

Still, Friedgen expects a tough game from the Blue Devils.

"I have a lot of respect for (Duke head coach) David Cutcliffe," said Friedgen. "I know they had a disappointing loss last week and I know Duke is going to come in here ready to play. We're going to have to be ready."

Following practice, Friedgen announced that linebacker Adrian Moten, wide receiver LaQuan Williams and punt returner Tony Logan will serve as captains for Saturday's game. He also named running back Paul Lariviere as the offensive scout team player of the week and linebacker Alvin Thomas as the defensive scout team player of the week.

Wide receiver Kevin Dorsey, a Forestville, Md., native, will carry the Maryland flag onto the field Saturday and wide receiver Kerry Boykins will bring the American flag.

Kickoff for Saturday's game is set for 6:04 p.m. EDT, with the game to be streamed live on ESPN3.com and broadcast on the Terrapin Sports Radio Network.

Tickets for the game are available through the Maryland Athletics Ticket Office by calling 1-800-462-TERP or clicking here.
