COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The Maryland Terrapins swept the Spring Hill Suites at Arundel Mills Maryland Invitational claiming the crown and defeating Fordham, Bradley and Georgetown without dropping a set. Senior Brittney Grove earned tournament MVP and freshman Mary Cushman and sophomore Remy McBain were also named to the All-Tournament team.
Maryland, now 5-1, has had its best start under third-year head coach Tim Horsmon with five consecutive victories. The Terps registered their only loss this season to Big Twelve school Missouri, who is receiving votes in the AVCA Coaches poll, at the Tiger Invitational last weekend.
With just one match left on the weekend, Maryland faced cross town rival Georgetown Saturday evening. The Terps needed to win only one set to clinch the tournament title. Led by five kills from senior Michelle Kenning the Terrapins took a convincing 25-15 opening set victory over the Hoyas, securing their spot on top. McBain dished out 13 assists in the first stanza and added two digs.
The Hoyas bounced back and put up a fight in the second game. Each team took turns going on runs of five points or more and the score tied three times. A Terrapin service error knotted the score at 23 just before a McBain kill gave the Terps set point. Junior Maddi Lee served up an ace to close it out.
Maryland took the momentum into the final set with a 5-1 scoring streak. Georgetown called an early timeout at 7-2 but the Terrapins continued to pull away, leading by as many as 10 points.
Following another Hoya timeout, Georgetown went on a 5-1 run, pulling within six. But a determined Maryland squad continued to shut out the competition. The Terrapins committed only two attack errors to Georgetown's 10. Lee also helped the Terps out with four service aces. A dig from freshman Sarah Harper, set by Taylor Jones and successful attack by Cushman ended the weekend.
Cushman and junior Lisa Scott finished the match with nine kills, leading the Terrapins. Scott also led in blocks with four.
Earlier in the day, Maryland swept Bradley, 3-0. McBain led all players with a career-high tying nine kills and .643 attack percentage. Grove produced eight kills, 12 digs and assisted on five blocks while junior outside hitter Lee and Kenning each registered seven kills.
The Terps started off on 4-1 runs in both the second and third sets. A huge defensive effort by senior Marissa Odom during the second stanza extended the Terrapins' lead to 12-5. Odom picked up six digs in that set alone.
Cushman and Kenning led the offensive attack in the final set with five and four kills, respectively. Maryland's defense also held Bradley to a -.065 attack percentage with eight errors and only six kills on 31 attacks. Senior Grove tied her season-high mark in digs in the third set with nine.
Maryland led by as many as 12 points before Cushman closed out the set for the Terps, 25-13.
The Terrapin volleyball team remains at home as they host their second tournament of the season, the Spring Hill Suites at Arundel Mills Terrapin Invitational Friday, Sept. 10-11. In attendance will be Fairfield, Tulane and Penn. All Maryland matches will be streamed live on umterps.com.
