BALTIMORE - Following a promising combine for a pair of seniors and a Generation adidas contract for a junior All-American goalkeeper, Maryland will once again send some of its best and brightest to the next level when the 2011 Major League Soccer SuperDraft kicks off Thursday at noon.
Zac MacMath will forgo his senior season after signing one of only 10 coveted Generation adidas contracts. One of the finest goalkeepers in Maryland history, MacMath racked up a 0.64 goals against average as the Terps reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA Men's Soccer Championship for the third consecutive season. Seniors Jason Herrick and Billy Cortes both competed in this year's MLS Combine in Florida. Herrick, a member of Team AdiPure, netted the insurance goal as the squad dropped fellow former Terp Cortes and Team Jabulani, 2-0. Cortes got the starting nod in the match. A video highlight of Herrick's goal can be found above.
ESPN2 will have live coverage of the first round of the 2011 MLS SuperDraft beginning at noon and MLSSoccer.com will pick up the second and third rounds. Maryland had two players taken in the draft last season as Drew Yates and Kevin Tangney were selected 29th and 35th, respectively. Sophomore defender Ethan White inked an MLS contract as a Homegrown player for D.C. United in December.
