COLLEGE PARK, MD. - Members of the University of Maryland men's lacrosse team have been busy as of late with two important community service projects: Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Light's On Foundation Coat Drive.

"These are just two examples of ways that our student-athletes give back to the community," says Maryland head coach John Tillman. "Our guys understand that they are fortunate to be in the situation that they're in and being involved in programs like these gives them the opportunity to make a difference."

Each Friday 21 members of the Maryland men's lacrosse team have been volunteering with the Big Brothers Big Sisters Program at Hyattsville Elementary School.

"Being a Big Brother has been amazing," says Maryland senior All-American Brian Farrell. "We go over there each week play games, talk to them or just hang out for an hour and in the end I believe we've gotten just as much, if not more, out of it than the kids have. It's been great and something I encourage others to get involved with."

Maryland men's lacrosse student-athletes also help out at the eighth annual Light's On Foundation Coat Drive that was held prior to the Maryland-Colgate men's basketball game on January 4.

Over the past seven years, the foundation of former Terp football player Shawne Merriman has collected over 17,500 coats for the benefit of the Community for Creative Non-violence Shelter in Washington, D.C.

Along with Merriman and other Terrapin student-athletes, members of the Maryland men's lacrosse team accepted donated items of new or gently-used coats, hats, scarves, and other warm clothing.
