BALTIMORE - Maryland had three players selected in the 2011 Major League Soccer SuperDraft Thursday, led by junior Zac MacMath, who was chosen by the Philadelphia Union with the fifth overall pick.
MacMath, a two-time All-American at Maryland, was tabbed by the Union as the first goalkeeper chosen in the three-round draft. The U-20 national team product chose to forgo his senior season with the Terps to enter this year's field. MacMath, a native of St. Petersburg, Fla., joins former Terrapin assistant coach Rob Vartughian in Philadelphia and should challenge Brad Knighton for playing time immediately.
Also selected in this year's draft were seniors Billy Cortes and Jason Herrick. Cortes was scooped up with the 38th overall pick by the New York Red Bulls. Herrick landed with his hometown Chicago Fire at No. 45.
Cortes, a diverse player from Mission Viejo, Calif., with the ability to play nearly any position on the field, suited up in 71 games in four years for the Terps and registered 11 goals. Herrick, a native of Elmhurst, Ill., was a two-time All-Atlantic Coast Conference First Team selection while leading Maryland in goals the past two seasons.
"We are thrilled for Zac, Billy and Jason and are positive all three players will make the Maryland men's soccer program and Terrapin nation extremely proud as they take their talent, determination and passion to the next level," head coach Sasho Cirovski said. "Maryland continues to have a longstanding tradition at this draft and we are eager to watch these three players in action when MLS play kicks off in March."
