#15/14 Maryland Heads to Virginia

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 15/14 Maryland women's basketball team will play at Atlantic Coast Conference opponent Virginia Friday night. The Terrapins (14-3, 1-2 ACC) and the Cavaliers (11-8, 0-3 ACC) will tip off at 8:30 p.m. in John Paul Jones Arena.

The game will be shown on the regional sports network, which includes Comcast SportsNet, Fox Sports Net South, Fox Sports Net Florida, and New England Sports Network. Please check your local listings for more information.

Friday's game will also be broadcast on the Terrapin Sports Radio Network and can be heard on ESPN 1300 (Baltimore) and ESPN 980 (DC).

The Cavaliers own the all-time series over the Terps 31-42. The Cavaliers won the last meeting, 82-68 on Feb. 8, 2010 in College Park, but Maryland won the last meeting in Charlottesville - a 61-60 win over No. 21 Virginia on Jan. 11, 2010.

The Terrapins are coming off of an 80-59 win at Clemson Sunday afternoon. Freshman Alyssa Thomas led the Terrapins with 21 points, nine rebounds and a career-high seven steals. She was named the ACC's Rookie of the Week on Monday for the third time this season.

Sophomore Tianna Hawkins scored 19 points, all in the second half, and grabbed 10 boards for her second double-double of the season. She went 9-for-11 from the foul line.

Maryland moved to No. 15 in the latest edition of the Associated Press poll and No. 14 in the ESPN USA Today Top 25 Coaches poll this week.

After Friday's game, the Terrapins will play host to No. 10/11 North Carolina (16-2, 2-1 ACC) Sunday at 5:00 p.m. in Comcast Center. Sunday's game will be shown live on ESPN 2. LAST TIME OUT...

Maryland won at Clemson, 80-59, Sunday afternoon in Littlejohn Coliseum.

The Terrapins held the advantage inside, outrebounding the Tigers, 43-37.

Maryland also had 16 turnovers, but forced 25 out of Clemson. The Terps scored 27 points off the Tigers' turnovers.

The Terrapins scored 40 points in the paint to the Tigers' 28. Maryland also had 21 second chance points to Clemson's 11.

SCOUTING THE CAVALIERS

Virginia is 11-8 overall this year and 9-1 at home in John Paul Jones Arena. The Cavaliers are 0-3 in the ACC.

Chelsea Shine and Ariana Moorer lead the Cavaliers in scoring with 10.8 and10.4 points per game.

The Wahoos average 40.0 rebounds per game.

Most recently, the Cavaliers beat Penn 54-45 on Sunday afternoon in Charlottesville.

ABOUT THE TERPS

Maryland fields one of the youngest rosters in the nation. The Terps are one of seven teams in the country to not have any seniors.

All five members of Maryland's No. 2 recruiting class played in their state's high school championship game and three, Alicia DeVaughn, Laurin Mincy and Alyssa Thomas won their respective titles.

Sophomore Diandra Tchatchouang played in the European championships over the summer. She led France to a fourth-place finish in the tournament. She was on her way to being tournament MVP, before suffering an ankle injury.

10 of the 14 Terrapins are over 6'0 tall and eight are over 6'2, making the Terps one of the tallest teams in the country. None of the Terps' 2010-11 opponents have as many players over 6'1.

GLASS CRASHERS

The Terps lead the ACC in rebounding margin (+14.1). They are third in the country only to Syracuse (+17.6) and Connecticut (+15.1).

Four Terps are in the top 20 in the ACC, which is more than any other team. Junior Lynetta Kizer is No. 10 (7.4 rpg) in rebounding, while freshman Alyssa Thomas is No. 13 (7.1 rpg). Alicia DeVaughn is No. 15 (6.3 rpg) and Diandra Tchatchouang is No. 19 (5.8 rpg).

The Terrapins have won the battle on the boards in 15 of 17 games. They have grabbed 793 rebounds to their opponent's 553.

ALL HANDS ON DECK

10 Terrapins are averaging over 14.0 minutes per game.

All 13 Terps have seen action in seven of the 17 games this year.

Eight players for Maryland have played in every game.

The Terrapins have had six different starting lineups through the 17 games of the season.

Maryland's bench averages 23.9 points per game. The Terrapins' bench has outscored its opponents' bench in 11 of the 17 games this season (406-285).

DOUBLE-DOUBLES

In the first 17 games of the season, five Terrapins have notched double-doubles.

Junior Lynetta Kizer leads the way with five so far - at No. 13/13 Georgetown, against Appalachian State, at Delaware State, at St. Joseph's and against BC.

Freshman Alicia DeVaughn earned her first double-double at No. 13/13 Georgetown with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Sophomore Diandra Tchatchouang earned the first of her career with 13 points and 11 rebounds against East Carolina. Her second was at St. Joseph's with 12 points and 13 rebounds.

Sophomore Tianna Hawkins notched her first of the year and eighth in her career at Loyola. She had 17 points and 12 rebounds and also grabbed her 300th rebound in that game. She earned her second at Clemson.

Freshman Alyssa Thomas earned her first career double-double at No. 3 Duke with 11 points and 12 rebounds. She followed with one the next game against BC.

MILESTONE UPDATES

Junior Lynetta Kizer broke the 1000-point mark against No. 17/17 St. John's with 13 points in the game. She is the 26th Terrapin to break the mark.

Head coach Brenda Frese earned her 200th win at Maryland Nov. 21 vs. American. She reached that mark faster than any coach in Maryland women's basketball history.

Just entering her ninth season in College Park, Frese's record is 211-76. (.735).

TERPS IN THE POLLS

Maryland moved to No. 15 in the latest Associated Press poll and to No. 14 in the ESPN/USA Today Top 25 Coaches poll this week.

The Terps began the season ranked 21st in the Associated Press poll. They have started the season ranked in each of the last seven seasons.

The week of Dec. 13 marked the 100th week head coach Brenda Frese had a team ranked in her career at Maryland. She now has had a team ranked 104 weeks while in College Park.

TEAM TYLER

In September, Coach Frese's two-year old son, Tyler Thomas, was diagnosed leukemia.

To help with leukemia awareness, a group of former Maryland players from the 2006 national championship team, including Marissa Coleman, Laura Harper and Kristi Toliver, are starting a foundation called Team Tyler.

Some of the Terps' opponents this year, including coaches Sharon Versyp and Martin Clapp from Purdue, the SAC from Loyola, the coaches at UMBC and Duke, have made contributions to Team Tyler.

Wristbands were distributed at Duke in honor of Team Tyler.

The Terrapins will be wearing green ribbons on their warmup shirts this season in honor of leukemia awareness.

TOUGH PLACE TO PLAY

Comcast Center was recently named one of the country's top ten toughest places to play. No other ACC school made the top ten.

The Terps have won 83.10 percent of their games in Comcast Center (118-24) since it opened in 2002.

Maryland has led the ACC in attendance since 2007.
