#15/14 Maryland Plays Host to #10/11 UNC

    COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 15/14 Maryland women's basketball team will play host to No. 10/11 North Carolina Sunday evening. The Terrapins (15-3, 2-2 ACC) and the Tar Heels (17-2, 3-1 ACC) will tip off at 5:00 p.m. at Comcast Center.

    The game will be shown on ESPN2 and will also be broadcast on the Terrapin Sports Radio Network. It can be heard on ESPN 1300 (Baltimore).

    UNC leads the all-time series 36-32, but the Terps own the advantage 16-12 in College Park. Maryland won the last meeting 83-77 in the first round of the ACC Tournament on March 4, 2010. Lynetta Kizer had 22 points and 10 rebounds to lead Maryland to the next round.

    The Terrapins are coming off of a 77-75 overtime win at Virginia Friday night. Diandra Tchatchouang hit a three with 14.0 seconds left in regulation to force overtime, then made a layup with 6.1 seconds left for the win.

    Freshman Alyssa Thomas notched her third double-double in four games with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Kizer had 16 points off 8-for-9 shooting from the foul line and Kim Rodgers added 11 points.

    Maryland moved to No. 15 in the latest edition of the Associated Press poll and No. 14 in the ESPN USA Today Top 25 Coaches poll this week.

    After Sunday's game, the Terrapins will play host to Wake Forest Friday at 8:30 p.m. in Comcast Center. Maryland women's basketball will be teaming up with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the Team Tyler Foundation at the Wake Forest game to share information on the disease and how to help.

    Leukemia survivors are invited to come to the game free of charge. To receive free admission, survivors can email umterps.com/awareness and enter the promotion code "awareness."

    Team Tyler wristbands and T-shirts will be available for sale. Proceeds will benefit the Team Tyler Foundation, which was started by a group of former Maryland players from the 2006 NCAA Championship team including Marissa Coleman, Shay Doron, Laura Harper and Kristi Toliver, to bring awareness to leukemia and to help children fighting it.

    Team Tyler was started in honor of head coach Brenda Frese's two-year old son, Tyler Thomas, who was diagnosed with leukemia in September 2010.

    Friday's game will be shown live on the regional sports network, which includes Comcast SportsNet, Fox Sports South and the New England Sports Network.   • Laura Broomfield and Jessica Breland lead North Carolina in rebounding with 7.7 and 7.5 per game.

    ABOUT THE TERPS

  • Maryland fields one of the youngest rosters in the nation. The Terps are one of seven teams in the country to not have any seniors.
  • All five members of Maryland's No. 2 recruiting class played in their state's high school championship game and three, Alicia DeVaughn, Laurin Mincy and Alyssa Thomas won their respective titles.
  • Sophomore Diandra Tchatchouang played in the European championships over the summer. She led France to a fourth-place finish in the tournament. She was on her way to being tournament MVP, before suffering an ankle injury.
  • 10 of the 14 Terrapins are over 6'0 tall and eight are over 6'2, making the Terps one of the tallest teams in the country. None of the Terps' 2010-11 opponents have as many players over 6'1.

    GLASS CRASHERS

  • The Terps lead the ACC in rebounding margin (+13.9). They are third in the country only to Syracuse (+17.6) and Connecticut (+14.7).
  • Four Terps are in the top 20 in the ACC. Freshman Alyssa Thomas is No. 11 (7.4) and Lynetta Kizer is No. 12 (7.3). Alicia DeVaughn is No. 15 (6.3 rpg) and Diandra Tchatchouang is No. 19 (6.0 rpg).
  • Thomas leads the ACC in rebounding in conference games (11.5). Thomas and Kizer lead the ACC in offensive rebounds in league games with 6.0 and 4.0, respectively.
  • The Terrapins have won the battle on the boards in 16 of 18 games. They have grabbed 845 rebounds to their opponent's 595.

    ALL HANDS ON DECK

  • Nine Terrapins are averaging over 14.0 minutes per game.
  • All 13 Terps have seen action in seven of the 18 games this year.
  • Eight players for Maryland have played in every game.
  • The Terrapins have had six different starting lineups through the 18 games of the season.
  • Maryland's bench averages 23.7 points per game. The Terrapins' bench has outscored its opponents' bench in 11 of the 17 games this season (427-323).

    DOUBLE-DOUBLES

  • In the first 18 games of the season, five Terrapins have notched double-doubles.
  • Junior Lynetta Kizer leads the way with five so far - at No. 13/13 Georgetown, against Appalachian State, at Delaware State, at St. Joseph's and against BC.
  • Freshman Alicia DeVaughn earned her first double-double at No. 13/13 Georgetown with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Sophomore Diandra Tchatchouang earned the first of her career with 13 points and 11 rebounds against East Carolina. Her second was at St. Joseph's with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
  • Sophomore Tianna Hawkins notched her first of the year and eighth in her career at Loyola. She had 17 points and 12 rebounds and also grabbed her 300th rebound in that game. She earned her second at Clemson.
  • Freshman Alyssa Thomas earned her first career double-double at No. 3 Duke with 11 points and 12 rebounds. She has had one in three of the last four games.

    MILESTONE UPDATES

  • Junior Lynetta Kizer broke the 1000-point mark against No. 17/17 St. John's with 13 points in the game. She is the 26th Terrapin to break the mark.
  • Head coach Brenda Frese earned her 200th win at Maryland Nov. 21 vs. American. She reached that mark faster than any coach in Maryland women's basketball history.
  • Just entering her ninth season in College Park, Frese's record is 212-76. (.736).

    TERPS IN THE POLLS

  • Maryland moved to No. 15 in the latest Associated Press poll and to No. 14 in the ESPN/USA Today Top 25 Coaches poll this week.
  • The Terps began the season ranked 21st in the Associated Press poll. They have started the season ranked in each of the last seven seasons.
  • The week of Dec. 13 marked the 100th week head coach Brenda Frese had a team ranked in her career at Maryland. She now has had a team ranked 104 weeks while in College Park.

    TEAM TYLER

  • In September, Coach Frese's two-year old son, Tyler Thomas, was diagnosed leukemia.
  • To help with leukemia awareness, a group of former Maryland players from the 2006 national championship team, including Marissa Coleman, Laura Harper and Kristi Toliver, are starting a foundation called Team Tyler.
  • Some of the Terps' opponents this year, including coaches Sharon Versyp and Martin Clapp from Purdue, the SAC from Loyola, the coaches at UMBC and Duke, have made contributions to Team Tyler.
  • Wristbands were distributed at Duke in honor of Team Tyler.
  • The Terrapins will be wearing green ribbons on their warmup shirts this season in honor of leukemia awareness.

    TOUGH PLACE TO PLAY

  • Comcast Center was recently named one of the country's top ten toughest places to play. No other ACC school made the top ten.
  • The Terps have won 83.10 percent of their games in Comcast Center (118-24) since it opened in 2002.
