#14 Maryland Plays Host to Wake Forest

    COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 14 Maryland women's basketball team will host a Team Tyler Leukemia Awareness night Friday, Jan. 28 at the Wake Forest game at 8:30 p.m. in Comcast Center. The game will be shown on Comcast SportsNet + locally. The Terrapins (16-3, 3-2 ACC) would like to invite all leukemia survivors to come enjoy the game free of charge in honor of their fight.

    In order to receive free admission, survivors can register prior to game time by emailing umterps.com/awareness and enter the promotion code "awareness."

    The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society National Capital Area Chapter will be on hand to promote awareness and share information on the disease and how to help. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society ® (LLS) is the world's largest voluntary health agency dedicated to blood cancer. The LLS mission: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. The National Capital Area Chapter serves Washington DC; the Maryland counties of Prince George and Montgomery; and the Virginia Counties of Loudoun, Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria and Prince William. More than 2,500 patients and families are served by the chapter each year.

    Team Tyler wristbands and T-shirts will be available for sale. Proceeds will benefit the Team Tyler Foundation, which was started by a group of former Maryland players from the 2006 NCAA Championship team including Marissa Coleman, Shay Doron, Laura Harper and Kristi Toliver, to bring awareness to leukemia and to help children fighting it.

    Team Tyler was started in honor of head coach Brenda Frese's two-year old son, Tyler Thomas, who was diagnosed with leukemia in September 2010.

    The Terrapins own the all-time series over the Demon Deacons (10-11, 1-4 ACC) 50-12 and have won the last nine straight meetings.

    The Terrapins are coming off of an 88-65 win over No. 10 North Carolina Sunday evening in College Park. Alyssa Thomas notched her fourth double-double in five straight ACC games for her second straight ACC Rookie of the Week honor and fourth on the year. Four other Terrapins scored in double-figures in Maryland's biggest win over UNC since 1990.

    Maryland moved to No. 14 in the latest edition of the Associated Press poll and No. 14 in the ESPN USA Today Top 25 Coaches poll this week.

    After Friday's game, the Terrapins will play host to Longwood at 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets to Sunday's game are still available.

  • On Sunday, Maryland beat No. 10 UNC 88-65 in College Park. It was the Terrapins largest win over the Tar Heels since an 88-64 win on Feb. 6, 1990.
  • Freshman Alyssa Thomas had her fourth double-double in five ACC games with 16 points and 13 rebounds. She was 6-for-6 at the free throw line.
  • Four other Terrapins scored in double figures, including Diandra Tchatchouang, Lynetta Kizer, Alicia DeVaughn and Laurin Mincy.
  • The Terrapins held the advantage inside, outrebounding the Tar Heels 55-32 and winning the battle in the paint, 40-34. Maryland had 29 turnovers in the game, one short of a season-high.
  • The Terps shot a season-high 92.0 percent from the foul line, as they went 23-for-25. Six players were perfect at the stripe.

    SCOUTING THE TAR HEELS

  • Wake Forest is 10-11 overall, 1-4 in the ACC and 0-6 on the road.
  • Brittany Waters leads the Deacons in scoring with 11.5 points per game.
  • Sandra Garcia leads with 5.6 boards per game. As a team, Wake Forest averages 42.7 rebounds per game.
  • On Sunday, the Demon Deacons fell at home to Clemson, 77-73 in overtime.
  • Maryland owns the all-time series over Wake Forest, 50-12, including the last nine straight.

    ABOUT THE TERPS

  • Maryland fields one of the youngest rosters in the nation. The Terps are one of seven teams in the country to not have any seniors.
  • All five members of Maryland's No. 2 recruiting class played in their state's high school championship game and three, Alicia DeVaughn, Laurin Mincy and Alyssa Thomas won their respective titles.
  • Sophomore Diandra Tchatchouang played in the European championships over the summer. She led France to a fourth-place finish in the tournament. She was on her way to being tournament MVP, before suffering an ankle injury.
  • 10 of the 14 Terrapins are over 6'0 tall and eight are over 6'2, making the Terps one of the tallest teams in the country. None of the Terps' 2010-11 opponents have as many players over 6'1.

    GLASS CRASHERS

  • The Terps lead the ACC in rebounding margin (+14.4). They are third in the country only to Syracuse (+17.3) and Connecticut (+14.7).
  • Four Terps are in the top 20 in the ACC. Freshman Alyssa Thomas is No. 8 (7.7) and Lynetta Kizer is No. 12 (7.4). Alicia DeVaughn is No. 16 (6.2 rpg) and Diandra Tchatchouang is tied for No. 18 (6.0 rpg).
  • Thomas leads the ACC in rebounding in conference games (11.8). Thomas and Kizer lead the ACC in offensive rebounds in league games with 5.2 and 4.0, respectively.
  • The Terrapins have won the battle on the boards in 17 of 19 games. They have grabbed 900 rebounds to their opponent's 627.

    ALL HANDS ON DECK

  • Nine Terrapins are averaging over 14.0 minutes per game.
  • All eligible Terps have seen action in 10 of the 19 games this year.
