#14 Maryland Welcomes Longwood Sunday

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 14 Maryland women's basketball team will welcome Longwood to College Park Sunday for a 2 p.m. game at Comcast Center.

The Terrapins (17-3, 4-2 ACC) are coming off of a 75-44 win over ACC opponent Wake Forest Friday night. Alyssa Thomas led the Terrapins with her fifth double-double in six games with 19 points and 12 rebounds, while Tianna Hawkins added 12 points and 12 boards.

Maryland moved to No. 14 in the latest edition of the Associated Press poll and No. 13 in the ESPN USA Today Top 25 Coaches poll this week.

After Sunday's game, the Terrapins will head south to take on No. 25 Georgia Tech Thursday at 7 p.m. in Alexander Memorial Coliseum in Atlanta.

The Terps are coming off of a 75-44 win over Wake Forest Friday night.

Freshman Alyssa Thomas notched her fifth double-double in six games with 19 points and 11 rebounds. She was honored as ACC Rookie of the Week Monday for the second straight week and fourth time overall.

Sophomore Tianna Hawkins notched her third double-double of the year against Wake Forest with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Junior Kim Rodgers hit three three's in 1:11 against Wake as part of a 17-0 run to end the first half. She finished with 17 points.

The Terps have outrebounded their opponents in 18 of 20 games this year. They average 47.7 boards to their opponents' 33.1 Maryland leads the ACC in rebounding margin (+14.6).

LAST TIME OUT...

On Friday, Maryland beat Wake Forest 75-44 in College Park.

Freshman Alyssa Thomas had her fifth double-double in six ACC games with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Tianna Hawkins also notched a double-double with 12 points and 12 boards.

Two other Terrapins scored in double figures, as Kim Rodgers hit three three's for 17 points and Diandra Tchatchouang scored 10.

The Terrapins held the advantage inside, outrebounding the Demon Deacons 54-35 and winning the battle in the paint, 32-16. Maryland had 23 points off turnovers, while Wake Forest had six.

SCOUTING THE LANCERS

Longwood is 4-14 on the season and 1-7 on the road.

Brittanni Billups and Krystal Garrison lead the Lancers in scoring with 10.7 points per game each.

Billups also leads in rebounding with 6.7 per contest.

Most recently, the Lancers fell to Davidson 63-53. Morgan Smith led Longwood with 12 points.

Maryland won the only previous meeting between the two schools 85-40 on Jan. 31, 2010 in Farmville, Va. Four Terps scored in double figures as Kim Rodgers led with 15. She was 5-for-6 from outside the arc and Maryland was 10-for-18 from long range. Billups led Longwood with 17 points.

ABOUT THE TERPS

Maryland fields one of the youngest rosters in the nation. The Terps are one of seven teams in the country to not have any seniors.

All five members of Maryland's No. 2 recruiting class played in their state's high school championship game and three, Alicia DeVaughn, Laurin Mincy and Alyssa Thomas won their respective titles.

Sophomore Diandra Tchatchouang played in the European championships over the summer. She led France to a fourth-place finish in the tournament. She was on her way to being tournament MVP, before suffering an ankle injury.

10 of the 14 Terrapins are over 6'0 tall and eight are over 6'2, making the Terps one of the tallest teams in the country. None of the Terps' 2010-11 opponents have as many players over 6'1.

GLASS CRASHERS

The Terps lead the ACC in rebounding margin (+14.6). They are third in the country only to Syracuse (+17.3) and Connecticut (+14.7).

Four Terps are in the top 20 in the ACC in rebounding. Freshman Alyssa Thomas is No. 8 (7.9) and Lynetta Kizer is No. 13 (7.2). Alicia DeVaughn is No. 18 (6.2 rpg) and Diandra Tchatchouang is tied for No. 20 (5.7 rpg).

Thomas leads the ACC in rebounding in conference games (11.7). Thomas leads the ACC in offensive rebounds in league games with 5.2 per game.

The Terrapins have won the battle on the boards in 18 of 20 games. They have grabbed 954 rebounds to their opponent's 662.

ALL HANDS ON DECK

Nine Terrapins are averaging over 14.0 minutes per game.

Eight players for Maryland have played in every game.

The Terrapins have had six different starting lineups through the 20 games of the season.

Maryland's bench averages 25.4 points per game to their opponents' 18.8. The Terrapins' bench has outscored its opponents' bench in 13 of the 20 games this season.

TERPS IN THE POLLS

Maryland moved to No. 14 in the latest Associated Press poll and to No. 13 in the ESPN/USA Today Top 25 Coaches poll this week.

The Terps began the season ranked 21st in the Associated Press poll. They have started the season ranked in each of the last seven seasons.

The week of Dec. 13 marked the 100th week head coach Brenda Frese had a team ranked in her career at Maryland. She now has had a team ranked 105 weeks while in College Park.

TEAM TYLER

In September, Coach Frese's two-year old son, Tyler Thomas, was diagnosed leukemia.

To help with leukemia awareness, a group of former Maryland players from the 2006 national championship team, including Marissa Coleman, Shay Doron, Laura Harper and Kristi Toliver, are starting a foundation called Team Tyler.

Some of the Terps' opponents this year, including coaches Sharon Versyp and Martin Clapp from Purdue, the SAC from Loyola, the coaches at UMBC and Duke, have made contributions to Team Tyler.

The Terrapins will be wearing green ribbons on their warmup shirts this season in honor of leukemia awareness.

TOUGH PLACE TO PLAY

Comcast Center was recently named one of the country's top ten toughest places to play. No other ACC school made the top ten.

The Terps have won 83.30 percent of their games in Comcast Center (120-24) since it opened in 2002.

Maryland has led the ACC in attendance since 2007.
