Boston, Mass. -
The University of Maryland wrestling team earned a pair of out-of-conference dual wins Friday against Boston University and Harvard. On the road, the Terps squeaked out a 20-16 win against Boston before topping Harvard, 31-10.
"Our guys had to fight through some adversity and they responded well," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "Anytime you can go on the road and get wins, it's good, but when you do it against tough competition it is much more rewarding."
In their noon match-up, the Terps (7-3) and Terriers each finished with five match wins, however Maryland earned the team victory thanks to bonus points in three weight classes.
At 165 pounds, No. 5 Josh Asper provided the Terrapins an early six-point advantage with his 2:02 pin-fall over Kyle Czarnecki. Spencer Myers and Jon Kohler each earned major decisions at 285 and 141 pounds, respectively.
Leading 17-16 heading into the final match, Maryland watched as No. 15 Kyle John secured the win with a 6-0 decision over Nick Tourville at 157 pounds.
"We scored bonus points in a lot of matches today," said McCoy. "It's important because they can make a huge difference in duals but even more importantly in the ACC and NCAA Championships."
Against Harvard, McCoy and the Terps ensured the team victory much earlier as they won seven of their 10 matchups, including three first-period falls.
Kohler earned Maryland's first fall of the match, by pinning Fermin Mendez in just 47 seconds. Directly following Kohler, Dex Lederer pinned Joe Alie in just over two minutes to stretch Maryland's lead to 15-4.
After John dropped a tight 5-4 loss to No. 11 Walter Peppelman, No. 5 Josh Asper countered with a fall over Andrew Hogue in 1:02.
Ian Roy defeated Alex Pagnotta at 174 pounds but Corey Peltier, Dallas Brown and Spencer Myers earned three consecutive victories to give Maryland its second win on the day.
Four Terps- Kohler, Asper, Peltier and Myers- finished Friday with a pair of wins. Asper's two pin-falls give him a team-high seven on the season.
"Josh [Asper] did a great job getting two pins," said McCoy. "After Midlands it was important for him to back strong and he did. Jon Kohler and Corey Peltier also had some good wins and wrestled well."
Maryland will close out its three-match road series against Brown on Saturday at noon.
