COLLEGE PARK, MD. -
The NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Committee has announced the University of Maryland as a host site for the 2013 Division I Men's Lacrosse Quarterfinals.
"We're proud to have this opportunity to showcase our facilities and outstanding institution to the lacrosse community and the nation," said Maryland Director of Athletics Kevin Anderson. "Lacrosse is very important at the University of Maryland and to be able to bring this event back to Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium is a fantastic opportunity."
"We're excited about the opportunity to host the quarterfinals," said Maryland head coach John Tillman. "Lacrosse is so important to this school and this state and we're proud to be able to be ambassadors for that. Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium is one of the premiere venues in the country and has a long tradition of hosting big NCAA tournament games and we're looking forward to that tradition continuing in 2013."
Maryland will host the first quarterfinal at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium on May 18, while Notre Dame and the Indiana Sports Corporation will host the other quarterfinal in Lucas Oil Stadium, on May 19.
Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium was a common setting for NCAA men's lacrosse championship games, holding every lacrosse attendance record prior to the championship weekend moving to NFL stadiums in 2003.
"2013 will be an exciting year in men's lacrosse as we take one of the quarterfinals to a newer grass roots area in the mid-west, and we return one to the state of Maryland, a place widely known for lacrosse," said Tony Seaman, Division I Men's Lacrosse Committee chair and special advisor to the director of athletics at Towson University. "The committee felt moving one of the quarterfinals to a different geographic part of the country would aide in growing the sport of lacrosse, which is one of our most important goals. Both quarterfinal sites will play the games in top-notch facilities, and have staffs that are experienced and well-equipped for putting on a great championship event for all involved. We're looking forward to what is sure to be a memorable lacrosse weekend in both College Park and Indianapolis in 2013."
The 2013 NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championships will be held in Philadelphia, Pa., at Lincoln Financial Field, May 25-27.
