WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -
Freshman Carlisle Abele tallied nine kills and added two blocks, but it was not enough as the Maryland volleyball team lost to Wake Forest, 3-0 (25-18, 29-27, 25-20), Friday night. The Terps (9-11, 3-5) will be back in action Saturday, Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m. against Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Abele's nine kills was one shy of career high. Juniors Remy McBain and Caitlin Adams, and freshman Adreene Elliott each added six kills in the effort.
Wake Forest jumped out to a 5-2 lead early in the first set. The Demon Deacons lead steadily grew and only allowed the Terps to score consecutive points four times for the remainder of the set. Wake Forest enjoyed its largest lead at 17-10 before Abele sparked a three-point spurt with back-to-back kills and a block assist to force the Demon Deacons to take a timeout. Following the timeout, Wake Forest scored three of the next four points and went on to win 25-18.
In the second set, the Demon Deacons answered an early Maryland run to tie the set at eight. Wake Forest stretched the lead to three points at 14-11, before the Terps began to cut into it. Maryland scored six of the next seven points including kills by freshman Ashleigh Crutcher and sophomore Mary Cushman. The set remained tight until Wake Forest's Andrea Beck gave the Demon Deacons set point at 24-22. Following a Wake Forest service error, McBain tallied a kill to tie the set at 24. The Terps fought off three straight set points to knot the score at 26 before the Demon Deacons closed the set with back-to-back kills.
With the score tied at seven in the third set, the Terps scored three straight points capped by a McBain block to give Maryland the advantage. Wake Forest scored six of the next seven points to edge out in front. The Terps tied the match at 15 following an Abele kill. The two teams traded points until Wake Forest gained the advantage at 20-19. The Demon Deacons scored three straight points to put the set out of reach and go on for the 25-20 win.
