The Maryland volleyball team rallied to win the third set and held a lead late in the fourth, but could not hold off NC State as the Wolfpack defeated the Terps 3-1 (25-19, 25-17, 25-27, 25-21) Saturday night.
Sophomore Sarah Harper set a career high with 31 digs and freshmen Ashleigh Crutcher added 16 kills, one shy of a career high. Freshman Adreene Elliott recorded a .500 hitting percentage and tallied 10 kills while Remy McBain finished with her team-leading ninth double-double in the effort.
The Terps opened the match with four straight points including two kills from Elliott and one from senior Maddi Lee. NC State rallied and scored seven of the next 10 points to tie the match at seven. The Wolfpack gained a 13-9 advantage before Maryland took a timeout. Coming out of the timeout, the Terps scored the next three points capped by an Elliott and Lee block. Each time the Terps closed within one point, NC State maintained the lead. The Terrapins pulled within one point five times for the remainder of the set, but were unable to tie. At 19-18, NC State scored six of the last seven points to take the first set 25-19.
NC State took the lead early in the second set. With the Wolfpack leading 5-4, NC State scored four straight points to force a Maryland timeout. Sophomore Mary Cushman ended the run with kill immediately after the timeout with NC State leading 9-5. The Wolfpack grew the lead to 14-6 before the Terps' offense went to work. Crutcher tallied a kill and McBain followed with a service ace as part of a Terrapin run that cut the NC State lead to 15-12, and forced the Wolfpack to call a timeout. After the Terps trimmed the lead to 16-14, NC State scored the next seven points to take command of the set. The Wolfpack went on to win the second set 25-17.
The third set opened with four straight points by the Wolfpack. NC State stretched its lead to 12-5 before the Terps scored six of the next seven points to trim the lead to 13-11. The Wolfpack scored the next two points, but a service ace by freshman Kaitlyn King and a kill by Elliott ignited a five-point Maryland run to give the Terps a 16-15 advantage. The Wolfpack tied the set on the next point. The set stayed tight with 11 ties and lead changes for the remainder of the set. After a kill by Dariyan Hopper, NC State had set point at 24-23. Following a Maryland timeout, Crutcher tied the set with a kill. The Wolfpack earned set point on the next possession, but the Terps tied the set once again with a kill by Elliott. On the serve, Harper tallied an ace and Crutcher secured the set for the Terps with her sixth kill of the frame.
There were eight ties and lead changes to begin the fourth set before Cushman and McBain broke a 13-13 tie with consecutive kills to give the Terps a 16-13 lead. Following a timeout, NC State regained momentum and took the lead 21-18, and went on to win the set 25-21.
