Oct. 9, 2011

Final Stats

CLEMSON, S.C. - The Maryland volleyball team (9-10, 3-4 ACC) dropped a five-set match to the Clemson Tigers, 3-2 (25-22, 23-25, 22-25, 25-20, 16-14) Saturday night to close out the weekend road trip.

Sophomore Mary Cushman and Ashleigh Crutcher both tallied 17 kills and 11 digs, and redshirt freshman Carlisle Abele had a career-high 10 kills to lead the Terps. For Cushman, it was her third double-double in the past four games.

Clemson used an eight point run to take a 13-8 lead in the first set. The Tigers stretched the lead to as much as six points at 19-13 before the Terps began to chip away. Kills by Cushman and Crutcher and two assisted blocks by freshman Adreene Elliott and Abele pushed Maryland in front at 22-21. Following a kill by Clemson's Alexa Rand to tie the set, the Tigers scored the next three points to capture the set.

The Tigers led by as much as five points at 12-7 early in the second set, but back-to-back kills by junior Caitlin Adams and Cushman cut the Clemson lead to 13-12. The two teams would trade points resulting in four ties for the remainder of the set. With the set tied at 23, Cushman gave the Terps set point with a kill. The Rochester, N.Y., native stepped up to serve and dropped the ball in between two Tiger defenders. Clemson could not control the serve and the Terps took the set to even the match at one.

Five Cushman kills gave the Terps a 16-8 advantage midway through the third set, but Clemson answered with four straight points to close the gap. The Tigers cut the Terrapin lead to two points three times late in the set, but the Terps responded each time. Junior Remy McBain recorded a kill with a nicely placed attack to give the Terps set point, 24-22, and a Clemson error won the set.

The fourth set featured 10 ties and lead changes and remained tight early. With the set tied at 12, the Tigers scored five straight points to give Clemson a 17-12 lead. A kill by Crutcher and a service ace by McBain cut the Tiger lead to three points, but following back-to-back kills by Clemson's Sandra Adeleye the Tigers led 21-16 and went on to win the set 25-20.

In the fifth set, Clemson broke a 7-7 tie with three straight points to lead 10-7. The Terps pulled within one point three times before breaking through to tie the set at 14. Facing set point following a Clemson kill, Abele's attack was blocked to end the match.
