
Terps Lose to Hokies in Three Sets

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Senior Maddi Lee tallied a team-high 10 kills and sophomore Sarah Harper added 14 digs as the Maryland volleyball team lost to Virginia Tech 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 25-20) Friday night. The Terps (9-19, 3-13 ACC) travel to Charlottesville, Va., Saturday to face the Virginia Cavaliers at 7 p.m.
Lee's 10 kills is her fifth match in the last eight with double-digits kills. Sophomore Mary Cushman added six kills, and junior Remy McBain finished with 19 assists.
Virginia Tech scored seven of the first nine points to open the match forcing the Terps to call a timeout. Maryland scored the first two points out of the timeout courtesy of a kill from freshman Carlisle Abele and a service ace from sophomore Caroline Niski. The Hokies answered by scoring the next five points to take a 12-7 lead. Virginia Tech went on to win the set 25-12.
With the second set tied at nine, Virginia Tech scored four consecutive points to gain an early lead. Consecutive kills by Lee and freshman Adreene Elliott closed the gap to two at 13-11, but the Hokies responded by scoring three of the next four points to take command of the set. Virginia Tech won the second set 25-17.
The Hokies opened the third set with eight consecutive points. With Virginia Tech leading 11-4, Cushman recorded a kill to spark a three-point Maryland run, but the Hokies responded with a three point run to hold the advantage. With Virginia Tech leading 17-13, consecutive kills by Lee and Elliott cut the lead to two points, but the Terps would not get any closer as Virginia Tech stretched the lead to 19-15 and won the final set 25-20.
