Final Stats

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Junior Remy McBain and sophomore Mary Cushman each had double-doubles and senior Maddi Lee added 15 kills, but the Maryland volleyball team lost to Virginia 3-1 (14-25, 25-23, 25-21, 30-28) on Saturday at Memorial Gymnasium.

McBain had a career-high 60 assists and registered 10 digs for her team-leading 12th double-double of the season. Cushman finished with a career-high 21 kills and added 16 digs.

Maryland (9-20, 3-14 ACC) took control of the first set early by scoring nine of the first 11 points, and 21 of the first 26 points. The Cavaliers attempted to hang in and scored five consecutive points before McBain ended the run with one of her six kills. With the Terps leading 24-14, Cushman closed out the frame with one of her six first-set kills.

Virginia gained a 17-11 lead in the second set following a Simone Asque kill. The Terps responded and eventually tied the set at 21 following six consecutive points that included two kills from Cushman and two kills from freshman Carlisle Abele. A Virginia error gave Maryland the lead and the Cavaliers called timeout. Following the timeout, sophomore Sarah Harper, who recorded 20 digs, added a service ace to increase the Maryland lead to 23-21. The Cavaliers responded with four consecutive points, three by Simone Asque, to win the set.

The third set featured 12 ties and lead changes. Cushman brought the Terps within one point at 16-15 with a kill, but the Cavaliers scored four of the next five points to lead 20-16. Back-to-back kills by Lee and Abele closed the gap, but Virginia followed with a kill and went on to win the set 25-21.

Maryland jumped out to a 10-3 lead early in the fourth set, and following a Lee kill led 16-10. The Terps maintained a healthy lead and earned set point at 24-18 following another kill by Lee. However, the Cavaliers scored seven consecutive points to force match point. McBain kept the Terps alive with a kill and Lee added another to give the Terps set point once again. A Maryland error tied the match at 26 and Lee added a kill to give Maryland a 27-26 advantage. The Cavaliers scored the next two points to earn match point, but Cushman tied the set at 28 with a kill. Virginia earned the victory following a Terrapin error and kill by Tori Janowski.
