Blue Devils Too Much for Terps

Nov. 18, 2011

Final Stats

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Junior Caitlin Adams had a season-high 15 kills on 48 percent hitting, and junior Remy McBain and sophomore Mary Cushman recorded double-doubles, but the Maryland volleyball team lost to Duke 3-1 (25-13, 25-17, 25-27, 25-19) Friday night. The Terps (9-21, 3-15 ACC) are back in action on Sunday at 2 p.m. when they will play Wake Forest at Comcast Pavilion.

Adams' previous season high was 13 kills against Ohio on Aug. 27. The Leawood, Kan., native tallied 11 of her 15 kills in the final two sets.

McBain finished with 43 assists and 17 digs for her team-leading 13th double-double. Cushman had 14 kills and 16 digs for her sixth double-double of the season.

Sophomore Sarah Harper recorded 20 digs and is now 12 shy of the single-season record.

Early in the first set, a kill by freshman Adreene Elliott cut the Duke lead to 6-5, but the Blue Devils scored eight of the nine next points to gain the advantage. Maryland would not get closer than six points for the remainder of the set as Duke won 25-13.

Duke carried the momentum into the second set. The Blue Devils scored eight of the first 11 points to force the Terps to call timeout. McBain added a kill after the timeout, but Duke continued the strong play and stretched its lead to as much as nine points at 19-10 before winning the second set 25-17.

The third set was tight with neither team gaining an advantage larger than three points. Following a Maryland error, Duke took a 10-7 lead, but the Terps responded by scoring three of the next four points to trim the deficit to one point capped by consecutive Cushman kills. The Blue Devils maintained their advantage until senior Maddi Lee, Cushman and Elliott tallied three consecutive kills to give the Terps a 20-19 lead. Maryland earned set point with a Cushman kill, but Duke scored three straight points to tie the match at 24. A Cushman kill was followed by a kill from Duke's Christiana Gray to keep the Blue Devils alive, but back-to-back Duke errors gave the set to Maryland.

A kill by Maddi Lee cut the Duke lead to 13-10 in the fourth set. The Blue Devils answered with back-to-back kills to increase their lead to five points. Maryland got within three points on three more occasions, but each time Duke responded and ended any Maryland momentum, and won the set 25-19.
