Head Coach Brenda Frese
Opening Statement:
"I thought it was a great final tuneup for us. We challenged our team to get better from last week to this week. From some of the areas that we focused on in film I thought we really improved on. I thought that we played unselfishly. We dominated inside with our post presence and did a very good job defensively of mixing up our defenses. We did a lot of things to help us prepare and get ready for our first regular season game Friday.
On the defense:
"I thought it was how we came out with our mindset and approach. I thought our starting group did a great job with their energy and intensity. It took off from there and we were able to continue it to our bench players. I thought everyone coming into the game had the intensity. I thought Brene (Moseley) and Whitney's (Bays) mindset added to the defensive intensity.
On what was good and what needs to improve:
"We want to be able to dominate the glass. We have been able to do that the last two games. We want to be able to play extremely aggressive. We want to be up tempo. We want to continue to fine tone in every area that we aren't pleased with at this point. We want to be prepared for what we are going to see every game."
On the guard play:
"I thought our perimeter play took what Holy Family was giving to us. They were extremely unselfish and were able to get the ball inside, and that's what the game dictated. Against a dangerous team we need to have an inside-out attack. When the game presents that I know our perimeter players will be ready to step up and fill that role as well."
On frequently playing Anjale Barrett and Brene Moseley together:
"Any time you can have two point guards on the floor, as unselfish as they are, I really think they help us with our tempo where we can rebound and go. They both have a tremendous feel for the game and know how to feed their teammates and get them the ball in the right position. It gives us an additional weapon having Brene [Moseley] on the floor with the way she can shoot the ball as well as run the offense."
On what she is looking forward to on the season's start on Friday:
"To continue to see how we match up to a Division I opponent. I know this team is excited to play the first regular season game at home in front of our fans. I want to see if we are improving and what are the steps we're taking. We're looking forward to getting started."
On what needs to be improved to make it to the tournament:
"We're going to go as far as our guards take us. Our perimeter play has to improve. We have to take care of the basketball. Tonight was a great start with 22 assists and 13 turnovers. We need to be unselfish."
Sophomore forward Alyssa Thomas
On quick start to the offense:
"We got out in transition. Our point guards were able to hit the open players and we were finishing the plays."
On the defense:
"We were pressuring the ball, getting in the lanes, and taking advantage on our steals."
Freshman guard Brene Moseley
On her play heading into the first regular season game:
"I try to push the ball in transition and get the ball to the open man. I think I have to give props to our bigs and our wing players because they get down the court and make my job easier."
