COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Isaac Goins, a standout defensive back, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for Maryland, head football coach Randy Edsall announced Wednesday.

Goins just completed a stellar two-year run at Contra Costa College in San Pablo, Calif. The 6-foot, 190-pound cornerback was a 2011 first team All-Bay Valley Conference choice after posting six interceptions. He was also nominated for all-region honors.

In addition, Goins (pronounced GO-ins), who will have two years of eligibility with the Terps, was selected to the 2011 academic all-conference team.

"I'm happy that Isaac will be joining us," Edsall said. "He possesses excellent coverage skills and plays the ball very well in the air. He's also a good tackler. Isaac is a quality young man who is solid in the classroom, as well as on and off the field."

As a freshman at Contra Costa under head coach Alonzo Carter, Goins started every game and posted 36 tackles, four interceptions and eight pass breakups.

A native of Hercules, Calif., Goins played at El Cerrito High School, where he was a first team All- East Bay choice at wide receiver as a senior in 2009. He was also first team all-league (ACCAL) pick that season at defensive back and wideout.

Goins will enroll for spring semester classes at Maryland in January.

National signing day is set for Wednesday, Feb. 1.
