Maryland, UConn to Play in Jimmy V Classic

BRISTOL, Conn. - The Maryland women's basketball team will play Connecticut in the Jimmy V Women's Classic, on Dec. 3, 2012, ESPN and The V Foundation for Cancer Research announced Tuesday.
The 11th annual game will take place at one of UConn's two playing facilities - the XL Center in Hartford or Gampel Pavilion in Storrs and will be shown on ESPN2. The event will fall on the night before the men's Jimmy V Classic from Madison Square Garden in New York City.
The game will mark the first time these two storied programs hit the court against each other. The Huskies will be making their fifth appearance in the Jimmy V Women's Classic, while the Terrapins will appear for the second time, and first since 2007.
ACC teams have made 11 appearances in the event. The league has had a team in the Classic in eight of the 11 years. This will mark the BIG EAST's eighth appearance.
"When I was approached with the opportunity for Maryland to be a part of this event and help cancer research, I jumped at it," head coach Brenda Frese said. "With my son's fight against leukemia, it's obviously something that has directly affected us. So many people have helped us and we're willing to pay it forward to help any other family dealing with cancer."
"From a basketball end, it won't be hard to get our team motivated. It will be a terrific test on the road. Everyone knows about Connecticut's program and Geno's incredible success. I'm also familiar with the players that will be joining their roster next season. I think it's safe to say they'll be very highly-ranked. We plan on being up for the challenge and I hope it's a game worthy of the cause."
The Huskies will come to College Park for a game vs. the Terrapins in 2013.
Next, the fifth-ranked Terrapins will welcome Delaware State (2-6) to Comcast Center for a 7 p.m. game Thursday. Maryland junior Tianna Hawkins will play against her twin sister, Tierra, who is the Hornets' leading scorer and rebounder. Fans will be able to watch the Maryland-Delaware State game live on TerpsTV Premium, which is a subscription service that offers exclusive video and audio content. The service is available for an annual subscription price of $79.95 or a monthly subscription of $9.95 per month.
Maryland is ranked No. 5 in the latest Associated Press rankings, released Monday, and No. 6 in the ESPN/USA Division I Top 25 Coaches' poll, released Tuesday.
