Maryland Head Coach Brenda Frese
Opening statement:
"Obviously you can just see what makes this team so special; just had a lot of fun tonight, the unselfish play. Obviously you can look at the box and see eight players in double figure. I liked the fact that we competed for 40 minutes, defensively as well as offensively. We played a complete game without looking at the score just trying to get better. The matchup obviously with Tiana and her sister Tiera was tremendous to see. I'm not surprised; they have been battling since they've been in the womb. It was a fun experience to bring her sister back home and for them to have that experience."
On having the largest margin of victory in school history:
"We've been challenging this team. It's fun coaching this team because everything you challenge them with, they want to go after and they want to please. That's what makes this game so satisfying is that previously we might have looked at the score but tonight we didn't and just continued to play hard for 40 minutes."
On giving players that don't play as much more confidence and playing time when the margin of points is so large:
It's a byproduct of how hard they've working in practice to be able to have this experience. For Essence [Townsend] and Sequoia [Austin], it's nice to be able to see their hard work pay off. I thought both of them were sensational and their confidence just grew and grew throughout this game. Also to give credit to their teammates, I thought everyone was really unselfish throughout this game.
On improvements made since last year:
"We have improved in most areas. I would say the most glaring one for us is taking care of the basketball and our assisted turn over ratios. Our point guards are doing a phenomenal job taking care of the ball. We're shooting the ball better as well. What I love about this team is their chemistry. You can tell on the court they are having a lot of fun and genuinely care about each other and when you care about each other good things are going to happen for you."
Junior forward Tianna Hawkins:
On going up against her sister:
"It felt really good. We've both been waiting for this moment since the schedules were released. We had a lot of family friends here tonight."
On guarding her sister in the game:
"I didn't ask to guard her but it just happened from coach's decisions. In regards to guarding her, I think I should know her best. We're twins; we've played against each other plenty of times before. I think going into the game I didn't focus and didn't let that she's my sister get to me. I just played her like she was anybody else."
Sophomore guard Sequoia Austin:
On getting career high points:
"It was really exciting to see how my team really supported me when I got in the game. Everyone played hard and kept up their energy."
Delaware State Head Coach Ed Davis
On playing Maryland:
"This is only about the third time playing Maryland in my tenure, a couple of times we were close. I realized they were really good, I just didn't realize how good until the kids got on the court. They executed like a ranked team and we played like an extremely unranked team. We're going to work on that."
On Tierra playing her sister:
"My biggest concern was for Tierra not to get into the hype of playing her sister and unfortunately she did. I just told her when she came off the floor that this would not happen again."
On Tierra's playing:
"She is a freshman and we're not trying to put a lot of pressure on her. We're just trying to put her in the position that she does well in terms of her development. She's a naturally good player."
On playing Maryland:
I was impressed with their bench scoring against us. With the attitude of being a ranked team you have to play that way and we understand that concept."
Redshirt Freshman Tierra Hawkins
On playing her sister, Tianna:
"When I came on the court I thought I wasn't nervous and it ended up that I was. This is something new to me, and I was nervous."
