#11 Maryland Plays Host to Virginia

    COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 11 Maryland women's basketball team will play host to Virginia Sunday afternoon. The Terps and the Cavaliers will play at 2 p.m. in Comcast Center.

    Maryland will be celebrating its annual WBCA PinkZone Game in honor of breast cancer research. Survivors of breast cancer can enter the game for free by emailing isurvived@umd.edu. The Terps welcome Get Inspired Events who have coordinated a "pink-glove" halftime dance to raise breast cancer awareness with the distribution of 50,000 pink gloves and collected over $18,000 for breast cancer charities.     Maryland will also recognize its legendary 1978 team at halftime Sunday. The Terrapins of 1978 went to the program's first ever Final Four and won the inaugural ACC Championship title.

    Maryland (20-4, 6-3 ACC) is coming off of an 83-75 loss at No. 21 Miami Thursday night. Five Terrapins scored in double figures in a strong second half surge.

    Junior Lynetta Kizer led with 15 points and 11 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the year. Tianna Hawkins scored 12 points and grabbed 10 boards.

    Virginia (14-12, 3-7 ACC) is coming off of a 94-92 four-overtime win at NC State Thursday night.

    Maryland won the most recent meeting, 77-75 in overtime in Charlottesville on Jan. 21.

    The Terrapins are No. 11 this week in the ESPN USA Today Top 25 Coaches poll and No. 12 in the Associated Press poll.

    The Terps have outrebounded their opponents in 22 of 24 games this year. They lead the country, along with Syracuse, in rebounding margin (+14.8).

    After Sunday's game, the Terrapins will play host to No. 7 Duke Thursday night. The Terps and the Blue Devils will play at 7:30 p.m. in Comcast Center. The game will be shown online on TerpsTV Premium.

    In their previous meeting this season, Maryland led Duke through much of the second half before falling 71-64 on Jan. 6.

    SCOUTING THE CAVALIERS

  • Virginia is 14-12 overall, 3-7 in the ACC and 2-7 on the road this year.
  • Maryland won the previous meeting this year, 77-75 in OT.
  • Most recently, Virginia won a four overtime game 94-92 over NC State in Raleigh. Ariana Moorer made a buzzer-beating layup for win.
  • Chelsea Shine is leading the Cavs in scoring with 10.9 points per game this year. Simone Egwu and Shine lead in rebounding with 5.3 and 5.2 per contest.

    ABOUT THE TERPS

  • Maryland fields one of the youngest rosters in the nation. The Terps are one of seven teams in the country to not have any seniors.
  • All five members of Maryland's No. 2 recruiting class played in their state's high school championship game and three, Alicia DeVaughn, Laurin Mincy and Alyssa Thomas won their respective titles.
  • Sophomore Diandra Tchatchouang played in the European championships over the summer. She led France to a fourth-place finish in the tournament. She was on her way to being tournament MVP, before suffering an ankle injury.
  • 10 of the 14 Terrapins are over 6'0 tall and eight are over 6'2, making the Terps one of the tallest teams in the country. None of the Terps' 2010-11 opponents have as many players over 6'1.

  • The Terps lead the country, along with Syracuse, in rebounding margin (+14.8).
  • Three Terps are in the top 20 in the ACC in rebounding. Lynetta Kizer is No. 9 (7.5) and freshman Alyssa Thomas is No. 13 (7.0). Alicia DeVaughn is No. 17 (6.0 rpg).
  • Thomas is No. 2 the ACC in rebounding in conference games (8.7). She and Kizer both lead in offensive rebounding (4.1) and (4.0) in league games.
  • The Terrapins have won the battle on the boards in 22 of 24 games. They have grabbed 1132 rebounds to their opponent's 778.

  • Nine Terrapins are averaging over 14.0 minutes per game.
  • The Terrapins have had six different starting lineups through 24 games this season.

    TERPS IN THE POLLS

  • The Terps began the season ranked 21st in the Associated Press poll. They have started the season ranked in each of the last seven seasons.
  • The week of Dec. 13 marked the 100th week head coach Brenda Frese had a team ranked in her career at Maryland. She now has had a team ranked 107 weeks while in College Park.

    TEAM TYLER

  • In September, Coach Frese's two-year old son, Tyler Thomas, was diagnosed leukemia.
  • To help with leukemia awareness, a group of former Maryland players from the 2006 national championship team, including Marissa Coleman, Shay Doron, Laura Harper and Kristi Toliver, are starting a foundation called Team Tyler.
  • Some of the Terps' opponents this year, including the coaches from Purdue, the SAC from Loyola, the coaches at UMBC and Duke, as well as Georgia Tech, have made contributions to Team Tyler.
  • The Terrapins will be wearing green ribbons on their warmup shirts this season in honor of leukemia awareness.

    TOUGH PLACE TO PLAY

  • Comcast Center was recently named one of the country's top ten toughest places to play. No other ACC school made the top ten.
  • The Terps have won 83.60 percent of their games in Comcast Center (122-24) since it opened in 2002.
