#10 Terps Head to Georgia Tech

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 10 Maryland women's basketball team will head south this week to take on Atlantic Coast Conference opponent Georgia Tech Thursday. The Terps and the Jackets are set to tip off at 7 p.m. in Alexander Memorial Coliseum in Atlanta.

The Terrapins (18-3, 4-2 ACC) moved to No. 10 this week in the ESPN USA Today Top 25 Coaches poll and No. 12 in the Associated Press poll. The Jackets (18-6, 6-2 ACC) are tied for No. 24 in the Associated Press poll.

Alyssa Thomas was named the ACC's Rookie of the Week on Monday for the third straight week and fifth week overall this year - the most of any other freshman this season. She ties a school record of five Rookie of the Week awards set by Crystal Langhorne in 2004-05 and Marissa Coleman in 2005-06.

Maryland is No. 2 in the NCAA in rebounding margin (+15.0). In ACC games, Thomas leads conference players in rebounding with an average of 11.7 per contest. Her 5.2 offensive boards per ACC game lead the league as well.

Junior Anjale Barrett leads in assists with 6.5 per conference game and sophomore Tianna Hawkins has the highest field goal percentage (.679) of any player in ACC matchups.

QUICK HITS

Maryland will play at No. 24 Georgia Tech Thursday at 7 p.m. in Alexander Memorial Coliseum. The Terrapins moved to No. 12 in the Associated Press poll and No. 10 in the Coaches poll this week.

Freshman Alicia DeVaughn led all scorers with 16 points off 6-for-10 shooting from the field and 4-for-6 from the line. She grabbed a game-high nine rebounds as well.

Freshman Alyssa Thomas scored all 14 of her points in 13 minutes in the first half. She hit a career-high 10 free throws off 12 attempts. She has had a double-double in five of six ACC games.

LAST TIME OUT...

On Sunday, Maryland beat Longwood 84-38 in College Park.

Freshman Alicia DeVaughn led all scorers with 16 points and all players with nine rebounds. She was 6-for-10 from the field and 4-for-6 from the line.

Freshman Alyssa Thomas scored 14 points, all coming in 13 minutes in the first half, as she hit a career-high 10 free throws off 12 attempts.

The Terps grabbed a season high 18 steals and were led by freshman Natasha Cloud grabbed a career-high five steals.

The Terrapins held the advantage inside, outrebounding the Lancers 50-26 and winning the battle in the paint, 40-8. Maryland had 34 points off Longwood's 31 turnovers.

SCOUTING THE YELLOW JACKETS

Georgia Tech is 18-6 overall, 12-1 at home in Alexander Memorial Coliseum and 6-2 in the ACC.

Tyanna Marshall and Alex Montgomery lead the Jackets in scoring with 13.8 and 13.7 points per game, respectively.

Montgomery also leads with 8.2 rebounds per game.

Most recently, the Jackets fell in overtime at No. 22 Miami, 84-74.

Maryland owns the all-time record over Tech, 42-17. The Terps are 14-12 all-time in Atlanta. The Jacket won the most recent meeting 61-60 on Feb. 5. 2010.

ABOUT THE TERPS

Maryland fields one of the youngest rosters in the nation. The Terps are one of seven teams in the country to not have any seniors.

All five members of Maryland's No. 2 recruiting class played in their state's high school championship game and three, Alicia DeVaughn, Laurin Mincy and Alyssa Thomas won their respective titles.

Sophomore Diandra Tchatchouang played in the European championships over the summer. She led France to a fourth-place finish in the tournament. She was on her way to being tournament MVP, before suffering an ankle injury.

10 of the 14 Terrapins are over 6'0 tall and eight are over 6'2, making the Terps one of the tallest teams in the country. None of the Terps' 2010-11 opponents have as many players over 6'1.

GLASS CRASHERS

The Terps lead the ACC in rebounding margin (+15.0). They are second in the country only to Syracuse (+16.6).

Three Terps are in the top 20 in the ACC in rebounding. Freshman Alyssa Thomas is No. 9 (7.7) and Lynetta Kizer is No. 13 (7.1). Alicia DeVaughn is No. 17 (6.3 rpg).

Thomas leads the ACC in rebounding in conference games (11.7). Thomas leads the ACC in offensive rebounds in league games with 5.2 per game.

The Terrapins have won the battle on the boards in 19 of 21 games. They have grabbed 1004 rebounds to their opponent's 688.

ALL HANDS ON DECK

Nine Terrapins are averaging over 14.0 minutes per game.

Eight players for Maryland have played in every game.

The Terrapins have had six different starting lineups through the 21 games of the season.

Maryland's bench averages 26.1 points per game to their opponents' 18.6. The Terrapins' bench has outscored its opponents' bench in 14 of the 21 games this season.

TERPS IN THE POLLS

Maryland moved to No. 10 in the ESPN/USA Today Top 25 Coaches poll this week and No. 12 in the Associated Press poll.

The Terps began the season ranked 21st in the Associated Press poll. They have started the season ranked in each of the last seven seasons.

The week of Dec. 13 marked the 100th week head coach Brenda Frese had a team ranked in her career at Maryland. She now has had a team ranked 106 weeks while in College Park.

TEAM TYLER

In September, Coach Frese's two-year old son, Tyler Thomas, was diagnosed leukemia.

To help with leukemia awareness, a group of former Maryland players from the 2006 national championship team, including Marissa Coleman, Shay Doron, Laura Harper and Kristi Toliver, are starting a foundation called Team Tyler.

Some of the Terps' opponents this year, including coaches Sharon Versyp and Martin Clapp from Purdue, the SAC from Loyola, the coaches at UMBC and Duke, have made contributions to Team Tyler.

The Terrapins will be wearing green ribbons on their warmup shirts this season in honor of leukemia awareness.

TOUGH PLACE TO PLAY

Comcast Center was recently named one of the country's top ten toughest places to play. No other ACC school made the top ten.

The Terps have won 83.40 percent of their games in Comcast Center (121-24) since it opened in 2002.

Maryland has led the ACC in attendance since 2007.
