Five Terps Named to ACC All-Academic Team

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The University of Maryland tabbed four student-athletes to the 2010 Atlantic Coast Conference All-Academic Men's Soccer Team, announced Friday by the league office.

Seniors Jason Herrick and Doug Rodkey, juniors Casey Townsend and Matt Kassel, and freshman Patrick Mullins were named to this year's list.

Herrick, who was drafted 45th overall by the Chicago Fire, was a focal point of Maryland's attack on the year. A First Team All-ACC selection, Herrick amassed 29 points on a career-high 11 goals and six assists. Herrick was also named an honorable mention pick on TopDrawerSoccer.com's Team of the Season.

Rodkey, who is currently a graduate student the School of Public Policy, posted seven points on one goal and five assists in 22 games this year. The midfielder started in all but one game for the Terps.

Townsend, a First Team All-ACC selection and TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Season Honorable Mention pick, tallied 23 points on the season. The junior scored nine goals and added five assists in 23 games this year. Townsend also netted four game-winning goals for the Terps. The Traverse City, Mich., native will return for his final season on track to receive a degree in Criminology/Criminal Justice.

Kassel is another player heading to the professional ranks, joining New York Red Bull as a Homegrown product. On the year, Kassel tallied 29 points on nine goals and 11 assists en route to being named a First Team All-ACC selection. The junior was also named to the ACC All-Tournament Team and was a first team pick for TopDrawerSoccer.com's National Team of the Year.

Mullins put together a very impressive first season for the Terps, being named the ACC Freshman of the Year. Mullins scored five goals and dished four assists while appearing in 21 games. Mullins is majoring in American Studies.

To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic team, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.0 cumulative average during his academic career. Kirk Urso, a junior Economics major from North Carolina, was named the ACC Men's Soccer Scholar Athlete of the Year.
