Freshman Alyssa Thomas of the No. 13 Maryland women's basketball team was named the Atlantic Coast Conference's Rookie of the Week the league announced Monday. In the final week of the 2010-11 season, she earned the weekly honor for the seventh time.
Thomas has scored in double figures in 13 of 14 ACC games this year. The newcomer from Harrisburg, Pa., averaged 16.0 points over the week and 8.0 rebounds. She is the No. 5 in the league in scoring (15.7 ppg) and in rebounding (8.4 rpg) in conference games. She is also in the top ten in steals (2.1).
She leads all ACC rookies in scoring, rebounding and steals.
Against Virginia Tech Thursday, Thomas had 15 points and seven rebounds. She was 6-for-10 from the field and 3-for-4 from the foul line. She dished a career-high six assists and had three steals.
At Boston College Sunday, Thomas scored a team-high 17 points, including 14 in the second half, pulled down nine rebounds, had four assists and three steals.
The ACC will announce its end of the season awards, including All-ACC teams, Rookie of the Year and the All-Freshman team later this week leading into the ACC Tournament in Greensboro, N.C.
The Terrapins enter the ACC Tournament as the No. 4 seed. Earning a bye in the first round, they will play the winner of the No.5-seed Georgia Tech and No.12-seed Virginia Tech game Friday at 11 a.m. in the Greensboro Coliseum.
