CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of Maryland gymnastics team defeated North Carolina to remain unbeaten in conference play Saturday. Trailing after two rotations, the Terps rallied to take the lead, winning with a team score of 193.00 to North Carolina's 192.600.
“Tonight wasn't the prettiest meet, but it is always nice to get a win against a quality team on the road,” said head coach Brett Nelligan. “This win is really a reflection of what this team is made of. Even in the toughest of situations, they are not afraid to fight for every tenth.”
On vault, freshman Katy Dodds led the Terrapin charge with a career-high 9.850. Junior Kyra Phillips followed with a season-best 9.800. Dodds' mark on vault would eventually win her individual honors vault as no Tar Heel scored above 9.800 in the event.
Sophomore Ally Krikorian earned Maryland's highest score on the uneven bars with a 9.750, her second highest mark on the season. Seniors Kaitlin Joseph and Kelsey McDermid and sophomore Kesley Cofsky each earned 9.600-plus scores to give the Terps 48.175 as a team on bars.
On balance beam, the Terps notched a 47.900 after freshman Elizabethe Manzi earned her second-consecutive 9.675 on beam. Cofsky's 9.625 along with junior Becca Pang's 9.575 and Joseph's 9.550 helped Maryland overcome the North Carolina edge on the event, 47.900 to 46.800.
Dodds' 9.775 on floor exercise was Maryland's highest in the rotation and the second best on the day. Senior Abigail Adams followed, tying eventual all-around title winner Morgan Evans of North Carolina, at 9.750 on floor. Cofsky's 9.700 on floor clinched the Terps' highest all-around competitor on the night, finishing with 38.650 points, third-best behind North Carolina's Evans and Krista Jasper.
With the win, Maryland improves to 2-0 in the EAGL and has scored marks of 193 or higher in four of its five meets in 2011.
The Terps will continue their conference road trip Saturday, Feb. 12, at Pittsburgh at 7 p.m.
