BLACKSBURG, Va. - Dwight Barbiasz and Amina Smith notched wins in the high-jump competition Saturday to pace the Maryland men and women's track and field team at the Virginia Tech Elite Meet.
Barbiasz cleared a career-high tying 7 feet, 3 1/4 inches which is just of the NCAA automatic-qualifying mark of 7-4 1/4 and well ahead of the rest of the field at the non-scored meet.
The junior's mark is also the top performance in the Atlantic Coast Conference this season and tied for sixth in the nation.
Barbiaz out-distanced Mike Edwards of Louisville and his teammate Neil Andgermeier, who both cleared 7 feet, 1/4 inch.
Smith also had a solid performance, clearing 5 feet, 8 1/2 inches to win on fewer misses over April Sinkler (Clemson), Megan Novinger (Miami) and Michelle Theophille (Louisville).
Smith had a career-best 5-feet, 10-inch clearance at last month's Terrapin Invitational.
In other Maryland action on Saturday, the conclusion of the two-day event, Chris Conway finished fifth in the 5,000 meters in 15:39.42, and the 1,600-meter relay team of Arielle Statham, Kiani Profit, Ayanna Fields and DeAnna Brown had a fifth-place showing (3:45.15).
